As we remember the 20th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks, let us pray for God’s mercy on our nation. May he bring healing, peace and unity in the midst of fear and divisiveness. And as followers of Jesus, may we point our nation to him as the source of all strength, comfort and hope.

God never intended that Christians suffer alone. Enlist good friends who will pray for you and encourage you in hard times. When you are struggling or feeling overwhelmed, cry out for help. Sound the trumpet blast! Let your Christian friends help bear your burden before the Lord.

The grief and sorrow that comes from loss – no matter how dark it feels – is only temporary. Jesus has uprooted the terror of grief and replaced it with resurrection and hope. And once you have the hope of Jesus, you can carry the sorrow without drowning. Hang on to hope!

Grief can feel like you’ve tumbled into a gaping abyss with no way out. But Christians do not grieve without hope. A day will come when there is no sorrow or loss or death. Hold fast to Jesus in your pain, knowing that in him, there is always hope.

When something isn’t right in your heart, it shows up in subtle expressions, unkind words, white lies, a complaining spirit. Sin deceives you into believing that these “small” things are no big deal. But all sin is offensive to God. Guard your thoughts and words and actions. Keep striving for holiness, even in the little things.

Any life-altering loss – a job, a dream, health, a friendship – brings grief and pain. Grief is part of what it means to be human in a broken world. All of creation groans. But in the midst of the pain, God is there. His Spirit groans with you and brings comfort. Trust the Lord in your grief.
