Hope Beyond Suffering: How We Can Smile Through Suffering, Part 1

May 23, 2023

Each of our life experiences are different. Yet suffering is one experience we all have in common.

The apostle Peter understood the pervasive reality of suffering, so he wrote a letter to Christians scattered by persecution who felt the persistent sting of emotional, spiritual, and physical pain.

Receive encouragement from Pastor Chuck Swindoll as he walks through 1 Peter 1:1–12. Like your brothers and sisters in Christ from long ago, you can faithfully endure suffering and receive eternal hope through Jesus Christ.

From the day he left his fishing nets to follow Jesus, Peter stood front and center among the other disciples. Nobody else’s courage seemed so stirring, failure so shocking, or restitution so profound. Peter was a man of extremes—extreme energy, enthusiasm, and flaws. At the end of the apostle Peter’s dynamic life, he penned a letter to a group of suffering Christians, 1 Peter, to urge them to lift their eyes to Jesus and renew their hope in Him. Get acquainted with this fisherman-turned-apostle as Pastor Chuck Swindoll teaches timeless truth from Peter’s life on failure, healing, and hope.

Few feelings are worse than guilt and shame. These feelings can flood your heart and mind until you’re drowning in the memories of past faults. How can we experience freedom from these failures? We must accept that everyone is imperfect, that we cannot change the past, and that our mistakes aren’t greater than God’s grace. If you feel assaulted by wave after wave of your past blunders, then be encouraged by Pastor Chuck Swindoll’s message on Isaiah 58:6–12. He shows how anyone can get past yesterday’s failures!
