The Enriching Rewards of Obedience, Part 1

March 12, 2018

When you hear the word “obedience,” do you think about blessings or burdens? Oftentimes, we think that to obey God means we will have to sacrifice—that it will somehow detract from our lives. But the truth is that obedience to God brings blessings and a fruitful life of joy and peace.

In this message, Dr. Stanley talks about the benefits of following the Lord. God wants to show us His love, power, and grace. But we must first be willing to trust His guiding hand. Don't spend your life wondering what God would have done if you would have obeyed Him. Learn to follow His directions and experience the blessings of walking in His will.

Jesus said that if we loved Him, we would keep His commandments (John 14:15). He didn't say we would go to church, read the Bible, or do good deeds. We would obey Him. Our obedience is a direct reflection of our love for God.   Christ paid the price for our sins on the cross, so let us not take His great sacrifice for granted. Instead, let us commit to obeying Him at every opportunity.

Many Christians want to obey God, but struggle to do so on a daily basis. When temptations, trials, and difficulties come their way, they don’t have the strong foundation that keeps them on track. But you can develop the strength to obey God by staying in close fellowship with Him, relying on the Holy Spirit, and trusting Him for your every need.

When things around you seem to be falling apart, do you have something solid to hold onto? First John 2:17 tells us that this world is passing away. But Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever—He never changes!

Have you ever imagined your tombstone? What epitaph do you want inscribed on it? "Rest in peace?" "Gone but not forgotten?" While those are kind sentiments, they say nothing about the impact your life left on the world. Whether carved in stone or simply engraved on people's hearts, don't you want to be remembered for your love? In this message, Dr. Stanley explains that love expressed through genuine, selfless service to others is the best legacy we can leave. Learn how to follow in King David's footsteps and serve the purposes of God.

If modern-day judges were asked to select the Old Testament character who best fit the title "Man After God's Own Heart," David would most likely not make the short list.  And yet God Himself bestowed that title upon a former shepherd boy who grew up to be a king and a warrior—not to mention a murderer and adulterer. Learn more about this paradox and the characteristics that made David a man after God's own heart. Take comfort in his story, because you don't have to be perfect to pursue God wholeheartedly.

"Don't just exist—go somewhere. Head upward. I believe God has made all of us to climb." —Charles F. Stanley Feeling stagnant? Need a fresh perspective? You won't find a new outlook by heading downhill; the best views are always at the top of the mountain. In this message, Dr. Stanley teaches that we, like David writes in Psalm 18, were made for the mountains: the call to come higher, experience more, and grow deeper inspires us to keep climbing even when the way is steep and harsh. Experience renewed energy to keep heading upward—you'll find God beside you every step of the way, placing your feet in high places.
