We need to talk about death and dying.  For the believer in Christ, it opens up the freedom to talk about heaven!

I was invited to speak at a school in Russia in a place where I’d never been before and I was immediately confronted with two questions:  Where is this place?  And how do I get there?

American poet Edgar Albert Guest wrote, “It takes a heap of livin’ to make a house a home.”  That’s another way of saying there is a tremendous difference between a house and a home.  You may have visited some of the mansions of the great such as Buckingham Palace in London, or Holyrood House in Edinburgh, or Hearst Castle in Northern California.  They are interesting to look at, and we are fascinated by those who live in them, but the average person would say, “No thanks! I’d prefer where I live right now.” Why?  Most mansions and castles are not very user-friendly.

If you were to describe the most beautiful place in the world, what would you select?  The Dolomites in Italy or the Swiss Alps?  Butchart Gardens in Victoria, British Columbia, a garden of incredible beauty?  Perhaps you would describe a beach in the Philippines, or the peak of a sunset over rolling fields of grain.  James Michener described the South Sea island of Bora Bora as the most beautiful place in the world.  To single out the most beautiful place in the world would be tough, right?

When I travel overseas, going to a place I’ve never visited, I’m always curious.  I want to know what it’s like, what people wear there, what we are going to do when we get there, what’s the weather like, what are the customs and what are people like who live there.  There are only two ways to find out: read the travel books, look it up online, or talk to someone who has been there.

“Don’t let your heart be troubled,” Jesus told the disciples in the upper room at the feast of the Passover. “You believe in God? Believe also in me.”  Now when Jesus spoke those words, there were plenty of reasons for His followers to be troubled and worried. He had just taken a mason and washed the feet of the disciples. He told theme there was a traitor in their midst, one who would betray Him. As He took the cup to share the Passover meal, Satan entered into the heart of Judas, who would later sell Christ for 30 pieces of silver.

Annoyed by the fact that his company had to be closed for Christmas and Easter, a certain man who was an atheist was complaining that Christians seem to have all the holidays.  He mentioned Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Good Friday and All Saints Day, adding, “We who are atheists have no holidays at all.”  “Oh, yes you do,” rebutted a friend, “April Fool’s Day.”

“Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus,” wrote a man who had known more than his fair share of difficulties.  His name? We know him as Paul, the Apostle of Jesus Christ. In one sentence Paul gives us the key to unlocking the door to a relationship of blessedness and gratitude. He is saying in simple terms that thanksgiving is not a holiday to be celebrated but an attitude of your heart to be daily observed because no matter how difficult the circumstances of your life—whether you be in a hospital bed or enjoying health, wealth, and happiness—God is in control.

Somerset Maugham liked Maxim’s restaurant in Paris so well that he used that restaurant to stage one of the 20thcentury’s most popular novels The Razor’s Edge; but it was not Maugham that first put Maxim’s on the map. It was an aspiring Hungarian musician who was very much down on his luck when he and his bride ate at a then obscure restaurant in Paris known as—yes, Café Maxim. When it was time for Franz Lehar to pay the bill for the meal, he reached for his money in his wallet and felt nothing. Frantically he searched his pockets again. He thought, “It had to be there!” But, no, it was missing. He had been the victim of a pickpocket and not only was his money missing, but his return train tickets back home to Vienna.

There is a difference between expressing thanks for something and being genuinely grateful for it.  For example let’s suppose you are a craftsman and you contract to do a certain amount of work for so much money, and you fulfill your obligation. The work is done within the prescribed period of time and you do it well.  When you fulfill your contract you are paid.  Common courtesy demands that you respond, saying, “Thank you!” as you pick up the check in the brown manila envelope and take your tools home.
