The book of Mark gives us insight into the authentic Jesus—not the Jesus who is a projection of our own desires, but the real Jesus of the Bible. This passage tells us four things about the power of Jesus: 1) He has real-world power; 2) He has infinite power; 3) He has unmanageable power; and 4) He has costly power.

The book of Mark was written to make sure we always had access to what the real Jesus actually said and did. In this sermon, we see three different parties react to Jesus. What is Mark doing in these verses? 1) Through the paralyzed man, he’s trying to challenge us; 2) Through our own confusion about how this fits in with the rest of the Bible, he’s trying to comfort us; 3) And through the leaders’ shock and anger, he’s trying to empower us.

A Jesus who’s a projection of your own desires can’t contradict you, can’t change you, and can’t help you. If you’re going to have a Jesus who really helps you or changes you, it has to be a Jesus with his own reality. We find the real Jesus in the New Testament Gospels. In this passage, we see: 1) The richness of Jesus’s interior life with God; 2) The richness of Jesus’s external ministry to others; and 3) How we can grow in that same wealth of character and power.

We live in a culture in which everyone seems to be talking about Jesus and wants some sort of connection to him — but everybody wants connection on their own terms. A Jesus that’s a projection of your own desires, is really just you, and therefore, is not a Jesus that can challenge you, change you, or help you. That’s why the real Jesus’s call is a powerful thing. In this passage, we see that the call of Jesus is 1) Different; 2) Drastic; 3) Developmental; and 4) Doable.

Many people want to talk about Jesus, but they want to relate to him on their own terms. The way to find the real Jesus is to encounter the Jesus of the gospels in the New Testament. In these verses describing the baptism of Jesus, we learn that 1) There is a dance; 2) The greatest need of your life is to get into that dance; and 3) Jesus is the one who can bring you in.
