Vince Garcia

September 16, 2013
A visit with Vince Garcia, a member of the Navajo Nation, is what’s on the table with this week’s program. Vince’s grandfather was adopted by a Spanish family in New Mexico, yet Vince lived in several locations as a young boy with his dad being in the Air Force. His father was a binge drinker and would beat up his mom. At age 11, Vince couldn’t take it anymore and stepped in to defend her, then was beaten up himself and thrown out on the streets of Chicago to live. Vince shares of the troubles he got into, and how he eventually prayed to receive Christ and began to minister to others who need Jesus, too. This is where he is today, as we look at health issues and ministry opportunities that God has sent his way.

Treestand safety is the topic of this week’s program. Statistics show that one out of three people that hunt out of a tree stand will have an accident at some time in their life, and a number of these incidents are fatal. Keith Jones from Summit Treestands is this week’s guest, and he is also a board member of The Tree Stand Manufacturer’s Association. Keith and Gerry discuss the various types of treestands and the evolution of the safety harnesses now used today. The goal of this program is to be sure that none of the listeners will become a statistic on the negative side.

One of the very first interviews that Gerry did in the early days of the radio program was at Maranatha Bible Camp with the director, George Cheek. During this interview, George talks about how the camp got started, and also looks at all the different outdoor outreach events that have been done at this facility over the years. The two also reminisce about the Tenth Annual Christian Bowhunters of America’s archery shoot years ago. Also, the story is told of how Steve Chapman’s son, Nathan, got lost at the camp, and the tale became a chapter in Chapman's book, “A Look at Life in a Deer Stand”.

The God’s Great Outdoors Fun Family Fossil Hunt is the topic of this week’s program as Gerry interviews Dr. John Whitmore about this adventure. The event takes place annually in August, and those attending can keep the fossils that they find. How hard is it to find these fossils? Dr. John Whitmore, who teaches geology at Cedarville University, has even had two blind students take his class and they are able to find fossils at this Ohio location. The two discuss all the evidence of Noah’s flood, and how there are scientists who misinterpret many of the facts of this biblical event.

Gerry joins Bruce and Anne Marie Parker as they discuss their brown bear hunting business in Sitka, Alaska, located on Admiralty Island. This island boasts far more brown bears then it does people, and it is one of the prime locations to hunt these bruins that can get up to 12 feet tall. This couple runs the business from a converted and completely remodeled tuna trawler, where they also home school their children while on the job. They share how they met, and how Jesus Christ is first in their lives in all that they do, including their contact with clients.

Gerry and Cyndi share with the listeners about the daily operations and program production for God’s Great Outdoors Ministry. The two reflect on some of the interesting experiences that they have had in the 17 years that the program has been on the air, and even share about unique questions and ideas some people have when they call the home office in West Milton, Ohio. Most of all, this couple is blessed by the notes and comments, plus the folks share with them how much they are praying for their work and the efforts they are putting forth to reach lost outdoorsmen and equip the saints on how to become active in outdoor outreach.
