God's Great Outdoors - Mitch and Chris Hoyt

January 20, 2020

On this week’s Trail To Adventure! Gerry and wife Cyndi are visiting with Arnie and Dee Wolf at their home in Chili, WI. Gerry was invited to meet Mitch Hoyt and his wife Chris, to learn about their story. In this interview Arnie tells that an event done in the area needed a speaker and he’d contacted Mitch Hoyt to share with all who attended. Mitch, who is in a wheel chair because of a deer hunting treestand accident that took place on a September morning in 2006, began to tell how he was disabled. Part of this testimony relates to Mitch’s wife Chris having asked him to please not go on that day. But, the deer hunter chose to focus on his desires instead. Climbing into a friend’s treestand that had been hanging there for several years and before he’d safety harnessed up, he crashed to the ground. Finding himself immobile and with his one elbow wedged in a small tree’s crotch, thinking he would died caused a life’s reflection. God used this time stuck there to speak to Mitch and begin a heart change in him that makes this a “must listen to” interview as the Holy Spirit used it all to change his life, as you’ll see!

On his trip back home from the annual National Archery Tournament held in Louisville, Kentucky, Gerry intercepts and visits with Mike Ritchie from Roscommon, Michigan. Mike and other members of his church have seen the number of their congregation double in size in the last few years because of the outdoor ministry program they do to bring folks under the hearing of the Word. This week’s interview topic’s focus is on CenterShot Archery, and how churches are bringing bows into their buildings. This shooting sport ministry teaches how to shoot the bow and arrow and ties it in with teaching God’s Word to those attending at each lesson. Mike Ritchie shares how he and his Church ministry team from Roscommon Baptist are using this program as one of key outdoor outreach programs, to touch the lives of men, women and children with the Gospel Message and clearly seeing lives changed for eternity.

This week’s Trail To Adventure! has Gerry in one of the most recognized sport fishing area in the USA; it’s the New York’s Finger Lakes region. He and wife Cyndi were at the Penn Yan Bible Church in Penn Yan, for that church’s first ever game dinner. Our host was there as that Saturday’s dinner’s speaker, then he shared at the Sunday’s Service, as Cyndi presented in special music in the morning’s time of worship. Afterward, Gerry sat down to visit with the Pastor Leo Galletta and the outdoor outreach event director, Rowley Hayner. The two men spoke of the churches desire to minister to their community and present the Gospel to each un-churched person there. Though not a big church or with many members who do outdoor activities, the area is loaded with folks who are. So, the idea of something to bring in sportsmen, seemed like it might just work to help change lives for Jesus Christ and it did, Praise God!

This week’s Trail To Adventure! is at a Game Dinner at Skidway Lake Baptist Church in Prescott, Michigan. Gerry is joined by this outdoor outreach ministry team’s leader, Gary Moore, who heads up the evangelistic event. After sharing about how he became involved in outdoor activities with his dad, Gary reflects on discovering the effectiveness of doing some form of sportsmen’s meal to bring in unsaved people to get them under the hearing of the Word. Skidway Lake Baptist Church’s event has some very special dishes they present to the local community, all with the hopes of having a platform from which to share the Gospel. Gerry saw and tasted some things at this Michigan Game Dinner he’d not experienced before, but best of all, there were a number of life changing decisions made!

On this week's Trail To Adventure! Gerry’s with Craig Johnson in Laramie, Wyoming. Craig tells how reading a copy of Gerry's book "Hunting Blunders and The One That Got Away!" was a part of the chain of events that led him to Christ. Craig shares how despite his difficult years growing up, including teenage alcoholism, everything was great in his later years. But then, Craig started to question why he was alive or even here? This subject so troubled him that he was seriously considering suicide if he didn't get the answer, so he asked God to make Himself known to him the way He wants to be known. This led to a series of events that brought Craig to Christ and he became incredibly active in sharing the Gospel through outdoor outreach as he grew in Christ. A program that will help you to be sure!

On this Trail To Adventure! Dr. Tom Rakow, the founder of The Christian Deer Hunters Association and Gerry visit together discussing the numerous outdoor ministries that have come about over the years. The idea is to provide Christians looking to reach others who enjoy time in God's creation with the tools to aid in the ability to help win them to receive Jesus Christ as their Creator God. Tom shares about how The Christian Deer Hunters Association got started and how he never expected it to be what it is today. Tom also tells how he began writing books, and today despite the fact that he flunked English several times in school, with his family’s aid he has written a number of books that are helping Christians reach out to their unsaved friends and relatives with true stories on fishing and hunting.

On this week’s Trail To Adventure! Gerry is visiting with Dr. Richard Swenson in Wisconsin and the two are talking about Intelligent Design. The truth is there is more of a chance mathematically that your car happened by accident over hundreds of millions of years, then just your eyeballs having evolved and how they work with your entire body? This is just one of the things that Dr. Richard Swenson shares in the interview with Gerry as they discuss this topic and Dr. Swenson’s book, “More Than Meets the Eye”. Having taught surgery at the University of Madison, Wisconsin, and having minored in physics, this interview is jam-packed with information that declares that we have a Creator God. Perhaps the most listened to interview aired by GGO in the 20+ years we’ve been broadcasting.

On this Trail To Adventure! Gerry visits with Steve Chapman in Nashville, TN as the two reflect on Steve’s first book “A Look at Life From a Deer Stand”, released back in 1996, yet is still going off of bookstore shelves as it has been reprinted many times. Meeting a need of women who wanted something for their male loved ones actively involved in the outdoors, (specifically hunting) but which also had a spiritual impact and would change lives. Steve also discusses how important outdoor ministry can be in reaching the man and the impact that it can have on the family. Steve hopes his new book “A Look at Life From a River Bank” will also help more men become trophies of grace for the Creator God Jesus Christ.

On this week’s Trail To Adventure! we’re in the land of ten thousand lakes, as Gerry is passing through Virginia, a city in the Minnesota, He visits with Joel Hasz in the area of the famous Boundary Waters. Joel has taken his love of canoeing adventures and those experiences and he’s written the different exploits into chapters, tying them to lessons from God’s Word, titled, No Wonder They Call It God's Country! Writes Gerry, “I believe Joel Hasz has written a book most will find easy to relate to. The analogies of viewing God’s Word to camping, time spent on extended trips, plus experiencing unknown adventures, is beautifully unfolded as one journeys through the pages. With more than half of the folks recreating in God’s Creation, I see his work as having use for individuals and groups, desiring a closer relationship with the Creator Jesus Christ.

On this week’s program Gerry visits with one of the most recognized leaders in the sport fishing arena, Al Lindner. The two hook up in Brainerd, Minnesota at the Lindner Media Studios, as Al relates about his testimony, which is the content in the tract produced by God’s Great Outdoors titled “A Fishing Legend Makes His Biggest Catch!” They talk about Al’s time in Vietnam, where he prayed to God for the first time in his life during a close call with the enemy. Al goes into the story of how his brother Ron and wife Deloris, came to Christ, (included in Ron’s tract: “The End Of The Line!”) soon Al’s wife Mary received Jesus too. Then with his two boys and Mary going to church, Al finally agreed to join the family. One day his youngest son requested Al to pray, but he didn’t know how! This broke the walls of Al’s heart and he had to go into the bathroom and cry. It was the beginning of the end of Al’s running from Jesus Christ.

On this week's Trail To Adventure! program, Dale Karch, of 3 Rivers Archery, a traditional archery supply company located in Ashley, Indiana, is joined by his son Johnny. Dale shares with Gerry about how he, his wife Sandy, plus the family came about buying the business. Dale started building custom bows in his garage to sell in their home state of Wisconsin, and others shooting the simple stick and string type bows enjoyed by traditional archers. Discovering that 3 Rivers Archery was for sale, Dale and his wife looked at how they could acquire this business and make it something that the entire family could get involved in. With God’s direction they accomplished this goal. Truly a family affair that’s grown their relationships and is making memories for today and for all eternity, Johnny has now taking over the reins of the business as his parents have passed the baton onto him with their retirement!
