God's Great Outdoors - Erland Brager

November 6, 2017

This week’s guest on the Trail To Adventure! radio broadcast is Erland Brager. Gerry is with him, as he’s traveled from Ohio to Hudson, Wisconsin, because he is the keynote speaker for a game dinner put on by a group of St. Croix River sportsmen. Even though the location for the event is at Faith Community Church in Hudson, this evangelistic outreach has seven churches from the surrounding area that join together annually to make it happen. Erland tells how the event got started and evolved simply because of a tour at Mathews Bow Factory by a group of men and their meeting of Matt McPherson. One man on that trip made a life changing decision in his walk with Jesus Christ and the other men could see how outdoor outreach ministry can work!

On this week's Trail to Adventure! Gerry is with a guest, who on being asked to help a woman load a road kill deer into the trunk of her car so that she could feed her hungry family, had an incredible and moving impact on him. Rick Wilson was that man and visits with the listeners to tell the story on this God’s Great Outdoors broadcast production. Challenged by this event, Rick felt God was calling him to in some way help people who were struggling with hunger issues when it comes to meat and was led to start the ministry Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry. From this little incident and the beginning of this ministry in the Hagerstown, MD area, FHFH has expanded across the nation, seeing numerous people fed by deer harvested by hunters in the fall each year.

On this week's Trail To Adventure! Gerry’s with David Hale, one of the two founders of Knight and Hale game calls. Knight and Hale is probably one of the best-known game calling businesses in the outdoor industry. David shares on how the business got started because of an article written about the tube turkey call the two of them built in the back of Harold Knight’s barber shop. He reflects on the journey they have had as a game call company, and how incredibly blessed they are because of their Creator God. Gerry and David discuss how we are without excuse in God’s creation not to see that there is a great Creator God. Also looked at, is “The Great Commission”, and the ways outdoorsmen can reach others with the love of Jesus Christ, to keep them from the flames of Hell when they die!

On this week’s Trail To Adventure! Gerry joins up with Kyle and Beth Wood at the Archery Trade Association Show in Indianapolis, Indiana. This couple owns an outdoor product equipment store called “Woodland Outdoor & Supply” in Tippecanoe, Ohio. This is a remote recreational vacation area with three lakes and more deer than residents, that sees lots of outdoor loving visitors. The two relive the way they use the business to build relationships with those coming through the doors each day. They tell how this interaction with their customers has allowed opportunities to share tracts and such over free coffee, opening doors of evangelism. Also, the Wood’s tell about the family’s mission trip to Mongolia, where reindeer are part of life there.

On this week’s Trail To Adventure! we’re in the land of ten thousand lake, Minnesota as Gerry visits with Ric McClary, the station manager of KTIG Pequot Lakes & KCFB in St. Cloud. They met up in the Brainerd Lakes area, a location that sees a flood of tourists during the summer months coming to enjoy time in God’s Creation. Ric talks of the time spent at the fly-in camp in Canada, Rushing Wind with his wife and what a special time it was connecting with others there. He also shares on his days in the 1960’s, when he as a hippie watched Billy Graham one day on TV as he spoke on a peace we all can have, he then prayed with him to receive Jesus as Savior.

This week’s Trail To Adventure! has Ex-Philadelphia Eagles football player, Rich Garza, is the guest visiting with Gerry. He’s in the middle of a speaking blitz to middle and high school students, as well as detention center inmates in Gerry’s home area of Ohio. Rich is just one of the pros from Sports World, a ministry that gets into school systems, where the Sports World Pro’s share their testimonies with those who attend. Rich talks about the fact that his life-long dream of becoming a pro football player, having been accomplished, revealed that it could not satisfy the God-shaped hole we all have and try to fill with something else. In his case, it included drugs and alcohol until he finally gave his life to Jesus Christ.

On this The Trail To Adventure! Gerry’s guest is the founder of Christian Bowhunters of America, David Roose. The two are together near the home office of God’s Great Outdoors in Ohio, talking about how archery and one's love of bow hunting can be used to exalt Jesus Christ as Creator, Lord, and Savior. Dave was a tent making pastor and while working on a construction job, near his Cadillac, Michigan home, God began to give him ideas about the CBA ministry. The fact is, over the course of that day in the early 1980’s, the Lord laid out the concept for the ministry as Dave jotted down the ideas that came to him as he worked. And the ministry came to be, just as God shared for this evangelistic ministry.

This week’s interview is with Pastor Dan Williams from Manitoba, Canada as he visits with Gerry at Rushing Wind Retreat Center in Ontario, Canada. A remote location to the point, those who attend are brought in by float plane. A fishing trip many folks dream of, and so opens the door for bringing along unsaved friends and relatives who need Jesus. Dan tells the story of his desire to catch a big lake trout and despite the bad weather conditions decided to go way up the lake and try for one. On heading back, the storm had really blown in and the wind wouldn’t allow the boat through a narrow, shallow area. Dan tried gunning the motor and broke the shear pin, which was only the beginning of the adventure!

This week’s Trail To Adventure! finds Gerry with Pro hunter, with a special story. Perhaps the listeners may remember the famous escape artist, Harry Houdini. (1874–1926) He was an American illusionist, stunt performer and it was said he could get out of anything! This week’s guest on the radio broadcast is from Realtree Outdoors TV Show, David Blanton. While hunting whitetails in Kansas he was told of a monster buck that had been seen for several summers, but disappeared in the fall when buck’s antlers harden, reappearing again the next summer. Where was he going? Thus “Houdini” became the whitetail’s moniker. David became obsessed with hunting this incredible animal to a point where the Holy Spirit revealed his heart wasn’t right with God, needing turned 180 degrees; it’s quite a true event!

On this week’s Trail To Adventure! treestand safety is the topic as statistics show that one out of three people that hunt out of a treestand will have an accident at some time in their life, with a number of these incidents being fatal. Jay Everett from Hunter Safety Systems is this week’s guest. Gerry and Jay spend part of this interview talking treestand safety to help the listeners understand the importance of the topic and seriously consider their need to wear safety harnesses while hunting from an elevated platform. Jay relates facts on the safety harness and how their research reveals that most falls take place going up, getting into, coming out of and then descending to the earth. The goal of this program is to be sure that none of the listeners will become a part of the tragic statistic, on the negative side.
