God's Great Outdoors

Dean Hulce

Dave Battle

June 3, 2013
This week’s program is a time with Dave Battle in Anchorage, Alaska as he shares about the way that he was raised to believe in Jesus, the Bible, and creation. However, in his college years everything he was being taught as he studied to be a wildlife biologist was telling him, not only was evolution a fact but there wasn’t even a God necessary for life to exist. An eye-opening look at how each skull from the different species has been intricately designed for that animal to exist at all.

The founder of The Christian Deer Hunters Association, Dr. Tom Rakow, is joined by his wife, Beth, as the two share on difficulties that the couple has had through their many years of ministry together. Beth gives a very interesting and eye-opening testimony of how prayer worked for them through their struggles and even a day when Tom was certain that someone was praying for him and they discovered who it was sometime later. God answers prayer!

The remote fly-in fishing adventures held at Rushing Wind Retreat Center every summer is the topic of this week’s program. The couple, Arnie & Dee Wolf, share how this ministry is all about reconciling men with God during the 5-day adventures that attendees come to experience each year. It clearly isn’t about fishing, but that is the “bait”, if you will, that is used that sees unsaved people come, or couples whose marriages are struggling during the marriage retreats. Arnie reflects on how they became owners of the camp after years of coming alongside the previous owners, and share how Rushing Wind’s ministry is for bringing glory to our Creator God.

Mike Peters of The Lord of the Harvest Archery Club, a chapter of Christian Bowhunters of America, shares about an annual outreach event in southeast Ohio. The Trophies of Grace Whitetail Deer Hunt was celebrating their 20th anniversary as Gerry did this interview with Mike, and they reflected back on the years past. This event sees men bringing other men, or families, and there have been many who have come to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, or completely turned their life around if they already had a relationship with Christ.

Knight & Hale Game Calls founders David Hale and Harold Knight are the guests for this week's interview. They share how the business got started because of one article written about the tube turkey call the two of them built in the back of Harold’s barber shop. These guys reflect on the journey they have had as a game call manufacturing company, and how incredibly blessed they are because of their Creator God. You will hear stories of how lives are being changed through outdoor ministry, and of people who have never been into church before, but are there because of some kind of outdoor outreach event.

This interview takes place at the Mathews Dealership Show in Wisconsin, and Gerry visits with a couple from California who own an archery shop near San Francisco. Joe and Beth Snell share how they started their business with very little capital, trusting that God would provide. Of course, God was faithful and they continue to grow their business called Pacifica Archery in Daly City, California. Beth, who comes from a third world country and knew nothing about archery, picked up the bow and became incredibly proficient as she shares how competitive she is. You’ll also hear her story of an encounter while in her treestand with a bobcat that turned into a tasty meal. Here is a couple who are using their business to see people come to Christ.

This interview with Kyle Ferguson, who is a police officer in Sitka, Alaska, aired several years ago. However, the listeners are going to hear a very interesting update on this family and their journey through life with the children that God has given to them. This is a very interesting program--one that will not only touch the heart, but also show God’s faithfulness in answering prayer.

The story of how Dave Kendall’s father was killed when he was just a little boy during WWII, at the Battle of the Bulge, will clearly touch the listeners' hearts. But, God is the father to the fatherless, and Dave’s grandfather filled in to take his dad’s place many times as he was growing up. Dave shares about his outdoor adventures as a young man on the farm, through college, and even in recent years as the interview is conducted at Rushing Wind Retreat Center in Ontario, Canada. Dave also talks about the ministry of Sports World, and how they are putting athletes in the schools to talk to young people about their need for Jesus.

Tracy Breen, a freelance outdoor writer, shares with Gerry and the listeners how he got started writing outdoor articles. Tracy also talks about the outdoor writing career, how little you are actually in the field or on the stream, and how much time you have to give to family, as over 80% of outdoor writer/celebrities become divorced. He also tells about his turkey hunting accident when he shot himself in the knee, and of his turkey dogs and how they work in the field to help you harvest a gobbler. Clearly, he gives all the credit to and is blessed by the Creator God, who allows him to do what he does.

This week’s program was recorded at the Prayz Network in Sparta, Wisconsin, as Gerry hooked up with Matt McPherson, located in the same city as the station. Sparta is where a number of Mathews products are produced, and Matt shares how portions of the money that come in for the archery equipment and the Lost Camo go to support ministries and mission fields around the world. Matt shares how he got involved in archery and started the business of Mathews, Inc.
