One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? Context is so important when we study Scripture. "There is now therefore no condemnation" is not all the text says even though the words are there.

Romans 8 is the greatest chapter in the greatest letter in the greatest book ever written. It's the Magna Carta of the Christian faith.

Paul walks alongside his fellow Christians and admits that he is wretched. The goal is for us to know that we're not alone or isolated. There is hope for us no matter what we are going through.

If you are like Paul, there will be times when you will do the very thing that you hate to do. Do you know what that means? You're a Christian and you're not alone in the battle; we need community.

The kind of fasting in this passage is not a diet or a way to get a handle on personal discipline or a way to clear the mind and body—it is for spiritual purposes. Here Jesus teaches us what fasting really is.

We live in a busy world with emails and an online, constantly interactive, world-wide interface grabbing our attention. When we stop and reflect, it is unnerving, because what becomes apparent is whatever lies within.
