The God Centered Church—The Sovereignty of God in Evangelism, Part 1

May 23, 2024

God has sent his Son and now the message is going out to the ends of the earth. We are a part of that story, and our lives have meaning for we are connected to the divine story of the whole universe. This gives us something to share in personal evangelism.

Free Resource | Does the Bible Promote Tolerance or Intolerance?
One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? The New Testament knows nothing of the Christian who is not connected to the local church—it just does not exist in the Bible. Today, our society is so disconnected. The gathering of God's people and our fellowship as we love one another is one of the most essential elements of the body.

In Acts 13, the early church begins to select leaders. Even today, church planting begins with the outreach of the gospel, and then as people come to faith in Jesus, they are gathered into a fellowship.

In one of his most startling statements, Jesus said that the cities where he was doing his miracles would fare worse than Sodom and Gomorrah, because the miracles these cities had received were far greater. So where does that leave us in our spiritually wealthy land? We have a wealth of resources available to us, and we need to take the opportunities we have seriously and respond.

In today's story, we may struggle to believe that God would send an angel to open prison doors. But Peter didn't believe it either! Prayer is important because it is the lifeblood of our Christian walk. Without prayer, we are disconnected from the experience of the presence of God.

Culture can influence us positively, but criticizing our culture is a necessary Christian responsibility—otherwise we'll just end up imitating it. Jesus prayed that we would be in the world but not of it. This requires our minds to be shaped by the truth of the Bible and then to bring that lens to our culture.

Our approach to culture and God is a little like: "I'm sorry, God, the internet connection that you're providing may be out there somewhere, but this culture is my preferred network and I'm just unable to connect with you." Too often, we prioritize our culture over our God.

When Saul was persecuting the early Christians, he was actually persecuting Jesus. The church is the body of Christ, so when someone opposes the church, they are opposing Jesus.

The biblical qualifications of an apostle are to be someone appointed by the Lord Jesus himself, and to be someone who has seen the risen Lord. Today we learn how Paul qualified in an unusual way.

Here we look at the response of Nehemiah's people to God's Word. Misreading the Word to define what it means to be a Christian can be problematic. We have to come back to who Jesus is and what it really means to be a Christian.
