Life to the Full: The Voice of One Crying in the Wilderness, Part 1

It's so counter-cultural that John's confession is not that he's the best prophet, it's that he's not special or important, and he's not the Christ. Just as John did, our task is not to point to ourselves but to say I'm not the one to look at or listen to, I'm not the expert; I'm not the Christ. Instead, look at Him. Our identity is founded in Him and in pointing other people to Him.

One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? As the Church, we don't love the Bible because we like intellectual things, or because we like books, or because we're old fashioned. We are a Church that loves the Bible because you find life to the full through Jesus, and you find Jesus through the Bible.

We fail to be astonished by Jesus when we think we can take or leave what he says. We should be astonished by this teaching and by the Teacher. The Sermon on the Mount reveals Christianity as far more than a mere religion; it's a message of rescue that leads to a transformed life.

People love to be told today that there are many different faith options. No one wants to hear that there's only one way to heaven. But the narrow way is the way that leads to life.

We can build walls to protect us, but without the right values, walls are as weak as the humans who guard them. A little bribe will make the gates open up. Psalm 125 points us to how to be truly secure.

Jesus presents a choice that is clear and absolute. There is no middle ground or other option so that no one is offended and all ideas are equally true. Christianity is not a religion, it is a word of grace and rescue.

In reality, this is one of the more difficult parts of the Sermon on the Mount to interpret. Why does Jesus teach here about asking, seeking, and knocking?

These six verses are probably the most important text in the Bible for us as we engage with contemporary culture. What does it mean not to judge? How do we correctly exercise our critical faculties as we go through life?

Part of why we worry is thinking that we are defined by our material acquisitions. That's the message we hear over and over again: we are what we earn. But Jesus said our nature and worth are not defined by what we own.

Trying to satisfy yourself with things on earth—cars, houses, money, ambition, career—is like trying to satisfy a dolphin in a bathtub. Just as dolphins were made to swim freely in an open ocean, people are made for God.

This side of heaven there is no place of perpetual peace. Christians are always close to danger, but the Lord is on our side so this danger need never bring defeat. Learn how a man after God's own heart frames danger in Psalm 124.
