Free Resource | Does the Bible Promote Tolerance or Intolerance?
One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? Ecclesiasties digs deeper to look at life from a personal experience point of view. Is life under the sun really meaningful, or is chocolate all there is to it? Only in Christ is there meaning.

There is a high motivation for us to deny ourselves for Jesus, because when we choose what Jesus says in His Word, we can bear the fruit of a true Christian. While denying ourselves does not come naturally, we need to lean into this counterintuitive and paradoxical way to find real life.

A pastor once said, "The one hope for the world is a revived church." Ephesians talks about unity, and it can be tempting to think that this is something only for the church. But the world needs a revived, unified church.

Jesus uses the picture of vines being pruned to illustrate our being disciplined. Jesus is saying he's the fulfillment of all God wanted from his people in the Old Testament, and if we abide in Him, we'll bear much fruit.

The very difficulty we all experience at times getting along with our spouses is God's way of showing that in Christ it can be done. Marriage was designed by God right from the beginning to speak of God's love for the church. When you see a healthy marriage, the way they love and respect one another, it speaks of Christ's profound love for His people.

Paul discusses the significance of family life. Family is to be a little church, and the Church is to be a big family. Paul wants the family to reflect the purposes of God just as the Church does. God's purposes for His people extend right to the very intimate and practical life of the family.

This passage frees the employee to work hard. Christians should be the best employees on the face of the planet. But the boss is not master-less; he or she serves the master as well. Even the boss has accountability as to how he or she treats others.

What do you really want? We could offer to help you construct a dream around your desires. But that's a cruel thing to do, because as we elevate the cross, that's the real way to find fulfillment. You must lose your life to save it.

We need to get out of the trap of viewing work as separate category from what happens at church, and stop thinking of it as what happens from 9 to 5. Our work often defines us and our identity. We need to see how work can be spiritual by orienting our work around our service of God. Our identity is in Christ first, and out of that flows our work.

If you're a Christian, you are a part of the church and you're going to want to be with the church. The Bible has no concept of a lone Christian; we are always part of the Jesus community.
