Free Resource | Does the Bible Promote Tolerance or Intolerance?
One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? If you are like Paul, there will be times when you will do the very thing that you hate to do. Do you know what that means? You're a Christian and you're not alone in the battle; we need community.

We live in a busy world with emails and an online, constantly interactive, world-wide interface grabbing our attention. When we stop and reflect, it is unnerving, because what becomes apparent is whatever lies within.

We no longer slave and serve in the oldness of the law, we slave and serve in the newness of the Spirit. God has given us a new heart and new desires and new affections and new inclinations; we serve God now.

Our natural appetites are driven on by sinful desire. Paul says these are aroused by the law. Moral and ethical education alone often do very little good toward reforming character -- it just makes a person a more socially acceptable sinner.
