Beyond Tolerance #2, Part 1

October 2, 2021

John is not just saying that it's really healthy for you spiritually to go to church and Bible study, although that's true. He says it's inevitable that if you have fellowship with God, you will want to have fellowship with other people. True Christians are a part of God's family, and they will want to be with God's family in church.

Free Resource | Does the Bible Promote Tolerance or Intolerance?
One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? The book of Philemon is a masterpiece of persuasion. Paul appeals to the readers, which is always better for gaining internal transformation rather than getting begrudging cooperation with what you have told them to do. The end point of his appeal is something of real, social, practical implication. The gospel must have that kind of impact in our world today, too.

This passage is read at a lot of weddings, but really it is about the love we are meant to have for each other as Christians. The more excellent way is the thing that binds us together, not that which distinguishes us from one another.

Ecclesiastes is saying that when you get to the end of your life, you must realize that you will stand before him who knows the secrets of every human heart. If you haven't thought about judgment lately, it might be time to do so. There is hope if you know Jesus.

Is it good to fear God? It does mean respect, but fear has more of an edge to it. The fear of God is to live in a relationship with him in such a way that we honor, respect, love, and tremble in wonder at who God is.

Today we need to take the idea of the pleasure of God and soak in it. It is often the barrier to deep Christian devotion that we have a view of God as starchy. He's reserved as as an insurance policy. Not at all! He savors old age, and he's the excitement of any age.

People can publically criticize Christian truth because they have the freedom that a biblical revelation contextualized in our society has given them. Try making the same religious criticisms about Islam in a Muslim country! But we must go beyond tolerance to love.

Ecclesiastes is saying that a relationship with God is worth every last ounce of youthful energy you have, no matter what age you are. So with all the energy you can muster, while you can, get God now!

Christians have often been accused of wasting this life in their fixation on the next. However, it is almost impossible to enjoy this life when uncertainty looms about the next. Even if you live your life well, you still need an answer to the problem of life, which is answered only in a personal relationship with God.

Boldness requires confidence, and confidence is a quality many find hard to experience. Or we project it in such an extreme way that it betrays a lack of personal security, perhaps from our childhood. In this passage, the teacher differentiates between growing up and growing old. Here's a call to really grow up into genuine spiritual maturity.

It used to be that in the secular West, we were unreasonably optimistic. Science was going to solve all our problems, economies were always going to boom, politicians were always honorable. But now, people do not trust the generals, the politicians, or the scientists. We can contrast this loss of optimism with the never-changing truth about God. He is the one we can trust.
