One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? There are moments when you gather together with family at the holidays when it's a little hard to get along. Unity in our spiritual families can be hard too. Especially in the last year, unity in the Christian community has been challenging. We need to remember that we're one in Christ.

Some people are happy no matter their circumstances. Paul was in prison, yet rejoicing. This joy is on offer for all of us. There is a real, accessible spiritual power that allows us to rejoice.

Joy can surprise us. When Paul was in prison, he was rejoicing. Joy is the gift of God for his people, but there is more to it than we think.

Simeon's message is quite a surprise. We are called to be involved in God's mission, and it's a very compelling and attractive call from Simeon to us.

You now have a part to play in this story of the glory of God if you are a Christian. You are a part of the cosmic story of Christ's glory. If we follow Jesus, we are part of this great drama.

How we need good news! There is so much bad news. At the same time, because we know we need good news, we must be discerning since there are all sorts of other messages out there that are not the good news we need. The Bible proclaims the true Good News, and we must grasp onto that.

Each step you take you enter into God's freedom. When you repent of your sins, get disciplined about reading the Bible, tell others about Jesus—you enter into that freedom. You're becoming who and what you were designed to be, until one day, there'll be no more night and God himself will be our light.

The secular culture is going beyond the idea of freedom—it's being able to do whatever you want whenever you want to. But it's utterly wrong-headed because what you want, desire, and feel is not necessarily what's good for you. Zechariah disbelieves the angel who comes to him and loses the ability to speak. After he regains the ability to speak, his song is about freedom.

The nature of real, biblical worship is that it focuses on salvation. It's not about thanking God for how we feel or our good health or having enough money. Here we study Mary's joyful song of worship.

In this song, Isaiah is talking about the coming of the kingdom of Christ, his birth and death and resurrection. He tells us about the final return of Christ that will bring everlasting shalom. All through this child.
