What Does “Poor in Spirit” Really Mean? (Matthew 5:3 Explained)
In this episode, Pastor Mike explains the powerful meaning behind Matthew 5:3: “Blessed are the poor in spirit.”
To be “poor in spirit” means recognizing your spiritual bankruptcy before God—understanding that you are a sinner in need of His mercy. Pastor Mike connects this to the story in Luke 18, where the humble tax collector cries out, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”
This kind of humility is the starting point of true salvation. Those who think they are already “good enough” miss it—but those who are broken and dependent on God are the ones Jesus calls blessed.
This teaching reminds us that before faith comes, there must be humility—and that God’s grace is given to those who know they need it.
