When Life is Tough Part 4 - Praying through the Pain

July 20, 2010
As we’re driving around, it’s important to know where your blind spots are, in order to prevent an accident. It’s also a good idea to keep in mind the blind spots of the drivers around you. Today on Focal Point pastor Mike Fabarez is going to raise our awareness to three blind spots related to our prayer lives. We’ll see what those are as we move along in our new series, “When Life is Tough.” The first point Mike wants to make is that we don’t always see the will of God.

When you’re going through a rough patch, what do you normally do? If you’re like most, maybe you make a few phone calls to those who are close to you? Some of us start worrying about it, and others start thinking about the possible moves they can take to remove the pain. The first thing we need to do is pray. That’s actually the most important thing as well. Today on Focal Point pastor Mike Fabarez encourages us to pray through our painful trials, as we get back into his series “When Life is Tough.”

The doctor says, “You’ve got cancer!” Your boss tells you your services are no longer needed. Your child is in a terrible accident. What do you do? Today on Focal Point,be encouraged to stop and pray. That’s the place to start, and yet too few Christians actually do that. Pastor Mike Fabarez is in the midst of a series called, “When Life is Tough.” And when life gets tough, we need to pray all the more, as we’ll see today.

The vast majority have a focus on the here and now. Is that where your focus is? If it is, let’s be encouraged to shift that focus from the present life, to eternity, today on Focal Point. To do so will be rough, because we’ll groan for something we don’t have yet. But God is willing to give us strength and patience if we’ll look forward and keep our eyes on Him.

For the unbeliever, this world is as good as it’s going to get for them, but the christian has a glorious future to look forward to. The next life is going to be far better than what we have now, in Christ. And don’t you at times wish you could hit the fast-forward button and be there already? The wait is hard, and there is some internal frustration to go along with that. Pastor Mike Fabarez will suggest our focus and hope needs to be in the next life, and not in this life.

We’re in a series called “When Life is Tough,” and here in part two we’re developing a biblical perspective on this fallen world. We established last time that we don’t exist for the planet. The planet exists for us, and God made it for us. Many have turned that around, haven’t they? Quite a number of movements have been launched in recent years that advocate a message contrary to God’s. Today we’re going to spend some time focusing on what Romans eight has to say about our dying planet. The good news is, as believers in Christ, we can look forward to a resurrected planet that will be far better than what we have now.

While the Lord wants us to be a good steward of this planet, and we’re certainly not to abuse the planet, a large number of people are taking things way too far. There are extreme views in our culture, to put it mildly, and today we’ll see the need for the pendulum to swing back to what the Bible has to say. There’s a biblical balance we need to arrive at, and so rather than following the crowd, let’s choose to follow the Lord. Mike will help us develop a biblical perspective on this fallen world of ours, and then have us look forward to the new earth.

Click on the T.V. today, and you’re likely to hear a message about our fallen world that’s completely different than what we find in Scripture. As we'll see today, we don’t exist for the planet. It exists for us. We need to come to a right understanding of the role of creation, and so today we’ll spend some time discussing how we’re to interface with this fallen planet.

When life is tough, many of us are quick to fixate on our pain. Today on Focal Point, the plan is to get our pain in proper perspective. Coupled with that, we need to keep focusing on the future. In essence Romans 8:18 tells us our present suffering is not worth comparing to the future glory. Mike shows us why being heavenly-minded does a world of good.

At various points of life, we encounter pain and difficulty. Maybe the doctor tells you, “You need a bypass.” Or you experience the death of child. Maybe you’re one of the many who have been laid off from work. Today on Focal Point, we enter into a new seven part series, for those times When Life is Tough. We’ll take you through Romans eight, and by the end of the study we hope you come away with a biblical perspective on suffering and pain.

If I was to ask you the all important question, “Are you a christian?” would you say like so many do, “I hope so!” We can actually be confident about our salvation. Today on Focal Point, pastor Mike Fabarez is going to have us be on the lookout for evidence that the Spirit indwells us.
