Mike Fabarez: Having spent years living and learning by Jesus's side, the Apostle John distilled Christ's love into this simple statement: He said, "By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us." Without reference to any warm feelings, John elevates Christ's sacrifice to a defining act of love.
We further see it when we read the rest of John's sentence. He says, "We ought to also lay down our lives for the brothers." Our call to love each other is a call to sacrifice our comfort, our freedoms, and our advantages for the good of other people. Those uncomfortable sacrifices are the essence of Christ-like love. So don't hold back today. Go the extra mile, stay the extra hour, or spend the extra dollar for the benefit of a brother or sister in Christ.
