Mike Fabarez: The Apostle Paul tells Christians that we should rejoice always. If we didn't know better, we'd think this command came from some kind of insulated or pampered optimist. But the history of the book of Philippians, where we find that verse, tells us a very different story. Paul, sitting in a Roman prison, was unjustly chained up for doing the right thing.
Well, the Philippians surely knew the story of Paul imprisoned in their own city, sat there singing to the Lord and rejoicing in spite of his chains. So regardless of how life is going, we should determine to be grateful and intentional about rejoicing about what God has done in the past, what he's doing in our present trial, and what he's certainly going to do in the future.
