Mike Fabarez: It's shocking and painful to watch someone you know and love turn their back on God. Why does that happen? Is there anything we can do to prevent it?
Jesus, in the parable of the sower, explained that some people hear the word and profess Christ, but later they bail out. People are falling away; they're turning their back. It says in that parable that it happens because they're facing persecution or they have some kind of time of testing. They get embroiled in the cares of the world and the pleasures of this life.
Only time will reveal whether faith is genuine, whether someone is following, or whether they're susceptible to turning back. Without being cynical, we need to invest in the lives of other people. Make sure their faith is genuine, that they have a root system that goes down deep, and that they bear fruit that lasts for eternity.
