The Making of Grace Unplugged

October 4, 2013
Sometimes, chasing your dreams leads you right to where you belong.  Such is the story line of Russ Rice and director Brad Silverman’s new film, “Grace Unplugged.” Russ and Brad talk about the making of the film, and Grace Trey, played by AJ Michalka, a young woman in the movie who leaves home seeking the stardom she’s always dreamed of.  Yet with each rung of the ladder she climbs, Grace feels more and more pressure to compromise her values. Will she reject her faith, or rediscover it? Grace Unplugged opens in theaters October 4.

Are your kids hitchhiking on your faith? Michael and Hayley DiMarco talk to parents about helping their children develop their own walk with God, rather than just mimicking them spiritually. Haley recalls a time when she believed in God, but chose to do as she pleased anyway. With hell most likely her future, she figured she might as well have fun. It wasn’t until later when a young man shared Christ with her, that she truly began to “own it.”  Similarly, Michael tells how his pick and choose faith left him lacking until a brush with the law had him re-examining what his life and faith were all about.

God can use anyone for His purposes. Especially the imperfect. Mike Howerton points to the life of Jonah, a man who knew God had a call on His life, but who ran in the opposite direction. God redirected His steps by putting Jonah in the belly of the whale.  Mike tells of a time when he tried to do life on his own as well, but shares how God lead him in a different direction, despite his past junk, reminding us that we can’t out-sin God’s grace.

Are you cooperating with God’s sanctification in your life? Mike Howerton reminds us that no matter how messy our lives have been, God is in the process of restoring and transforming us into something beautiful for His glory.  But in order to discern God’s call, we must be willing to spend time in the Scriptures and be obedient to His promptings.  Mike encourages those who desire to know God’s will to get quiet in His presence, invite God’s spirit into their lives, take a personal inventory, identify their dreams and finally, set some goals.

Our lives can get messy. But fortunately, God loves using messy people. Author Mike Howerton tells Dennis Rainey how his life began to change after he told the Lord in earnest that he’d like to be His.  Although the clouds didn’t part and he didn’t hear God audibly, He knew that God had a plan for his life and that God would use him.  Mike talks about hearing God speak, and shares a story about a time when a unknown woman called him in the middle of the night asking for prayer for her comatose husband.  Mike’s obedience would add another soul to God’s heavenly ranks.

What does life look like when faith is all you have? Dennis Rainey welcomes Jim Leininger into the studio to talk about the release of his new movie, “Alone Yet Not Alone,” a film based on a true story about two young sisters during the French and Indian War who are taken captive by hostile natives. While waiting for their rescue, the girls are comforted by the words of a family hymn, Alone Yet Not Alone. But when the girls are suddenly and cruelly separated, their faith is stretched even further.

What can we learn from a king who had it all? Plenty! Lydia Brownback opens the book of Proverbs, a book mostly attributed to King Solomon, to find day-to-day wisdom for the modern-day woman.  Lydia shares what Proverbs teaches about fearing the Lord, controlling our emotions and honoring God with our sexuality.

Has your life been marked more by wisdom or foolishness? Author Lydia Brownback points us to the Proverbs, the Old Testament tweets of their day, to discover new wisdom for everyday living. Lydia shares what the Proverbs teach about our tongues, and how to use our words to give life, rather than to destroy.  She also discusses what Proverbs says about our closest relationships, especially those with our friends and parents.

The 1960s were a time of unbridled sexual liberation. Old sexual values were questioned, criticized and discarded, and the grand experiment of free love begun. Now, 50 years later, the results of that “grand experiment” are in, and the report is devastating. The experiment is a failure, and we’re left with a gigantic mess. Bob Lepine says that mess is so big, so overwhelming that there is only source to whom we can turn for the cleanup.
