We've all been there. We need to approach a friend or loved one about a difficult matter and we don't know how to begin. Communications expert Tim Muehlhoff offers some communication tips for navigating a difficult conversation, and shares some examples from his own life.

Do you regret what you said? Communications professor Tim Muehlhoff reminds us that our words, especially those that are written, are powerful, and can often be misinterpreted. Without being able to see your body language or other facial cues, our email and other media posts can sometimes communicate a message we don't intend.

Words are like seeds. It's best then to be purposeful with the words that you sow. Tim Muehlhoff, an associate professor of communications at Biola, encourages listeners to anticipate the effect their words have on others and to think twice before they speak. Tim explains that behind each communication problem is usually a heart problem, and cautions against exploding your emotions on others.

God uses the weak to confound the strong. Dave Furman, pastor of Redeemer Church in Dubai, and his wife, Gloria, talk about the debilitating disease that has weakened his muscles, but not their faith or their ministry.

God is in the monotonous. Gloria Furman, a pastor’s wife and mother of four, talks about the day she realized that her mom duties weren’t interruptions to her spiritual growth, but that God wanted to interact with her in the day to day, amongst the dishes and the diapers.

How well do you know your intended? Husband and wife duo Bill and Pam Farrell, encourages men and women to know what they might be getting into by asking their boyfriend or girlfriend the right questions, reminding us that a good marriage demands good preparation.

How do you know if you’re ready to take the Big Step? Bill and Pam Farrell, authors of “The Before-You-Marry Book of Questions,” reminisce about their courtship in the 70’s, and encourage couples to walk in faith, not fear, towards marriage, but not without asking some strategic, thought-provoking questions to their romantic interest first.

Is there room for grace in the bedroom? You bet! Tim and Darcy Kimmel, marriage and family therapists for 31 years, explain that in a grace-filled marriage you have to put the other person’s interests first and be available. This doesn’t mean you can demand sex, which isn’t gracious, but rather doing whatever you can to meet your spouse’s need when possible.
April 23, 2014
Are you loving your mate as God loves you? FamilyLife speakers Tim and Darcy Kimmel define love as “the commitment of my will to your needs and best interest, regardless of the cost,” and talk about the three driving inner needs we hope to satisfy in marriage:  security, significance, and strength.
