Indebted to Love

June 25, 2020

Could arguing about money be negatively affecting your intimacy? Brian and Cherie Lowe, authors of "Your Money, Your Marriage," think it can. It certainly did theirs. The Lowes tell how they found themselves $127,000 in debt. After Brian cast a vision for what their life could be debt-free, they started paying off their bills, and as they did, their love life began improving. The Lowes encourage couples to slay the debt dragon and fall more in love!

Jeff and Sarah Walton have learned to make God's Word central to their daily lives. Sarah, who suffers with Lyme's disease, and Jeff tell how walking through the ups and downs of life has brought them to a place where they can honestly say, as Job did, "My ears had heard of you, but now my eyes have seen you." Together they share how God is using their trials to build up and comfort others in the body of Christ.

By the time Sarah was diagnosed with Lyme disease, she and Jeff's emotional, mental, and physical reserves were at their breaking point. Their oldest child was struggling with medical and behavioral issues, and Jeff's job often sent him far from home, leaving Sarah to juggle home care and child rearing all by herself. They also had financial issues, which were exacerbated when Jeff lost his job. Bottom line: they were holding on by a thread. Jeff and Sarah tell how the Bible became their lifeline and helped them see that there is purpose even in the trials.

Not many couples want to pattern their marriage after the book of Job. But Jeff and Sarah Walton, hit time and again with heart-crushing circumstances, began to find great comfort and wisdom in those pages. Soon after Sarah gave birth to their first child, their infant son came down with an infection. Together they leaned on the Lord to help them. Later their son started exhibiting strange and erratic behavior, and no amount of discipline seemed to help. As years went by and their family expanded to a family of six, Sarah began to battle Lyme disease. Hear what they've learned as they've walked through life's storms.

When life threatens to beat you down, don't lose sight of each other. That's the advice of authors Matt and Lisa Jacobson. The Jacobsons reflect on a particularly difficult time in their marriage—the birth of their fifth child, who was born with brain damage after suffering a stroke in utero. The long days in the hospital's ICU, along with starting a new company and caring for four other children at home, put a strain on their marriage. Matt explains what it means to "act like a man," and love and protect your wife and children in difficult times.

Is it inevitable that my teen will walk away from the faith once they hit college? Glenn Stanton, director of Global Family Formation Studies at Focus on the Family, says no way. He points out that organizations like Cru and the Navigators continue to thrive on the college campus, and thousands of students are growing in their faith despite sitting under the teaching of secular professors. Stanton reminds parents of the incredible influence they have in their young adult's life, and he tells how modeling a sincere and growing faith can have a tremendous effect on their son or daughter's own faith.

It's been implied that Christianity is on the decline. But is it really? Researcher Glenn Stanton doesn't think so. According to studies, Christianity is far from disappearing—and is even on the rise. Stanton shares that while more liberal mainline churches are clearly on the decline, non-denominational churches holding to the tenants of Scripture are thriving and growing, not just in America, but all over the world. Stanton reminds listeners that the Holy Spirit is on the move and always will be.
