Giving Thanks in Difficult Places

December 4, 2017

Best-selling author Ann Voskamp talks about the blessing of thanking God in the hard times. She recalls her earliest memory of seeing her sister killed in a farm accident. The pain and fear of that experience caused her to cut herself in her teen years. Voskamp reminds us that God loves us in and through our brokenness, and it is from that place of brokenness that we can give thanks most powerfully.

Lou Priolo, biblical counselor and author of "Resolving Conflict," reminds us that nothing is more important than patience when we're resolving conflict. Priolo defines patience as the ability to accept a difficult situation from the Lord, to suffer long, and to endure. We need to be as patient with others as God is with us, realizing that our spouse, or our circumstances, won't likely change overnight.

Biblical counselor Lou Priolo opens the Scriptures to Ephesians 4 to understand the benefits of humility and gentleness when resolving conflict. A proud person always sees the speck in another's eye, but never sees their own sin, which only intensifies conflict. A humble person doesn't seek revenge but rather looks at themselves first and asks for forgiveness for how they have failed to live up to God's standard.

Sometimes the way to peace is through conflict. Christian counselor Lou Priolo encourages listeners not to shy away from conflict, but to face it head on, knowing that's the only way we can finally gain resolution and peace. Lou gives examples from his own marriage on how his wife sometimes gently confronts him. The key is communicating with love, not anger or sarcasm.
