The average age of onset anxiety for girls used to be eight. Today, with the added stress of social media, coupled with an increased emphasis on academic and athletic performance, the average age in which therapists are diagnosing anxiety in little girls is six. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Dr. Tim Clinton and his guest, Sissy Goff, author of Raising Worry-Free Girls, discuss how girls can experience intrusive thoughts and get stuck, like a single-loop roller coaster. Sissy notes that a father’s affirmation of his daughter can provide relief and create connection. In addition, meditating on whatever is true, noble, and lovely, as Philippians 4:8 instructs us to do, is another way to combat the “worry monster.”

Sissy Goff, counselor and author of Raising Worry-Free Girls, says anxiety always involves an overestimation of the problem and an underestimation of self. On today’s edition of Family Talk, she warns parents not to rescue their daughter, which only serves to validate her anxiety. In essence, a parent might say, “You’re right, sweetheart, your concern is too big and you’re too small. You can't do it.” Instead, it’s critical to tell her, “You are capable. And I believe in you!” That will build her confidence, empowering her to become more resilient and independent.

When former pastor and popular Christian comedian Dennis Swanberg's great-grandfather immigrated from Sweden to America in the 1880s, he planted shade trees on his Texas farm. Years later, his grandson enjoyed the shade from those mature trees that his great-grandfather never could. On today's edition of Family Talk, Dennis invites listeners to commit their lives to leaving a legacy of "spiritual shade trees" for generations to come. Psalm 145:4 says, "Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts; let them proclaim your power."

According to Dr. Dobson, "an inheritance is something you leave to someone, while a legacy is something you instill in someone." On today's edition of Family Talk, speaker and comedian Dennis Swanberg delights an audience through his memories with his family. As he reflects on the humorous moments with his parents and grandparents, Swanberg explains that the spiritual legacy they left him was like someone planting a shade tree. When Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, he couldn't envision New York City's skyline, and when the Wright brothers built the first plane, they couldn't envision a 747. They planted "shade trees" for future generations to enjoy.

On today's program, his guest, speaker and comedian Dennis Swanberg, urges people of faith to be spiritual shade trees for the next generation by leaving a godly legacy. Psalm 1 describes the believer who delights in the Lord as a tree planted by streams of water.

The number one killer in the black community is not police brutality, drugs, or black-on-black crime. It’s the intentional killing of a human life inside the womb. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Toni McFadden explains that she aborted her baby when she was 18, scared and alone because she believed the abortion industry’s lies. After turning to Christ in college, she committed to chastity until marriage. Today, Toni and her husband, who was the father of her aborted baby and came back into her life years later, have four beautiful children. She now serves as a compassionate and bold voice for the voiceless.

On today’s edition of Family Talk, Tom and Dena Yohe assure hurting parents of children and teens in crisis that they are not alone. This mom and dad firmly believe that no matter what happens, you shouldn’t ever give up on your kids, and always trust in God! Throughout the Yohes’ heartache, God never abandoned them. After being in a revolving door of mental health therapy and in-patient care, Tom and Dena’s daughter moved back home where her parents established a tough-love, substance-free boundary. She was a prodigal daughter with destructive behaviors, but because her parents stuck together and provided unconditional grace with unshakable faith, the family was able to survive it all and help their daughter recover.

As a child, Tom and Dena Yohe’s (pronounced “yoy” as in ‘joy’) daughter had a sensory processing disorder. In school she was bullied and, sadly, by age 12, started cutting herself. To numb her self-hatred and depression, she turned to alcohol and drugs. On today’s edition of Family Talk, the Yohes recount their heartache and desperation as their prodigal child spun out of control. Ironically, the cutting gave their daughter both a sense of release and control. Dena documents the emotional rollercoaster, the recovery, and their hope in God in her book, You’re Not Alone: Hope for Hurting Parents of Troubled Kids.

When Julia Jeffress Sadler was told she was pregnant with triplets, she was terrified! She had already endured the pain of three miscarriages the previous year and was worried that something could happen. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Julia reveals that Psalm 30, verse 9 became her prayer during that season. The author of Pray Big Things echoed King David’s worry. "What is gained if I am silenced, if I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise You? Will it proclaim Your faithfulness?" After initially going into labor at 23 weeks and spending 49 days on bedrest, Julia successfully delivered her three healthy babies.

After suffering three miscarriages within one year, Julia Jeffress Sadler and her husband, Ryan, were devastated. In fact, she told God that she was angry with Him for allowing that pain in her life. After praying for three biological children and multiples, the Lord answered both prayers with triplets! When the tech giant urged Washington state legislators to adopt radical homosexual policies, the former NFL linebacker took a righteous stand. He states, "I believe that God has called us to be warriors." Ultimately, Hutcherson lived his life to please an audience of One, his Savior, Jesus Christ.
