Devoted to Good Works, Part 1

Ultimately, the gospel will mean that God’s people will be devoted to doing good works. Those works don’t save us—but they are the natural result of our salvation. Those who refuse to live in this way have clearly not been transformed by God’s kindness.

But we will only know how to do this when we remember how incredibly gracious and kind God has been to us in the gospel. Salvation comes through faith in Jesus, and him alone; law-keeping will not save. Having been saved by faith in Christ, we continue to live the Christian life by faith in Christ—with whom we were crucified, and who lives in us by his Spirit.

This is why a godly eldership is needed to protect the church from error. And this is why Paul is so concerned that the believers will live out their faith in integrity. The culture will call them to compromise at every turn. How very contemporary all of this sounds!
