Jesus, the Divider Part 1

March 21, 2016
Nowadays we hear much about how divided we are as a nation as if it was such a great revelation or a recent occurrence. Social division has been part of humanity since the dawn of history. Societies reach their highest level of unrest when the divide is not resolved with lasting solutions that are acceptable to all. It is virtually impossible to arrive at an agreement when opposite views are entrenched. Even though it is tough to achieve a good level of social balance, it is not an impossible task. So, if these divisions have been with us always, why do we say that they are not impossible to solve?

The fall of man didn’t stop God’s original plan for the human race and the world. In Gen. 3:15 He gave the assurance of the coming salvation. From that moment on God’s people looked towards the future with great anticipation. After Jesus' finished work, we look back on that day and with confidence we engage to do God’s will on earth as it is in heaven. Believing God is the key. Over 2 billion Christians believe in the existence of God, but the majority does not believe Him. No matter what anyone may say, America can never be great again with full liberty and the blessings everyone seeks without returning to God’s law.

The Pilgrims and Puritans, early on in America, established the central idea for the individuals to enjoy the freedom of self-government under God’s law. Biblical civil laws were written to punish and contain evil behavior, to be the source of justice for all, to protect life, liberty and property. As Christians, they were exposed to God’s laws regularly from the pulpits. Would they pass the vetting process to run for office these days?

The idea of the Founding Fathers of America was never that the civil government would be centralized, big and controlling. The founders dreaded for that to happen; they put checks and balances so no one could have the ultimate power, not even the people, and the country could always defend itself from despots and tyrants. Israel of old wanted centralized civil government like the pagan nations had and they requested this from God (1 Samuel 8). As a result Israel lost rights due to big government. This is the very reason the founders were not seeking to establish an imperial form of government. They trusted and relied upon the people and future generations to continue with the principles of God’s law to govern them to preserve enduring freedom, sadly, we have not.

Every nation has laws and the source of those laws becomes the god of that nation. All laws legislate morality. In our founding, it was the biblical understanding that brought the Founders to the realization and dimension of the responsibility to resist tyranny. The reality of being under the Lordship of Christ motivated them to be optimistic about the future. They understood that God’s law and His grace go hand in hand. They comprehended that all men are created equal and that the physical and spiritual life is one and the same. They understood that God’s laws must govern the individual in all areas of his life, the social life and institutions. That is a far cry of what is happening in our country today. How did we drift so far from our original foundation?

God’s plans are what matters above all else, without His plans and laws men and nations are always doomed to fail. All nations have a moral foundation for laws and they bow to them. Every law has a foundation of morality, therefore, it is religious in nature. Anyone that denies this hard fact deceives himself and is a deceiver of others: law = morality = religion (godly principles).

After the War Between the States, even though the nation did not split it was far from being united and free. Christianity, did not hold itself accountable before God, so, far from being an instrument of national reconciliation and healing, it turned its back on God’s moral absolutes. God's ideal government is self-government, which is the most important of all human governments, it is the foundation of an intelligent, knowledgeable and wise society. When individuals lack self-government, they are prompted to call evil good.

The past has much to teach us about what we are experiencing at present and what we can expect our future to look like. In 1863, the nation was at War between the States and there was chaos. The Senate requested that President Abraham Lincoln call a National Day of humiliation, prayer and fasting. They sensed that the most important missing ingredient, God, had been forgotten and ignored and this is part of what they wrote in that proclamation, see if it sounds familiar. "But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious Hand, which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us!"

As we continue to analyze what was going on in our country in the latter part of the 19th century, the Civil War was causing a horrendous bloodbath and great desolation was over the land; fear gripped every heart day and night. An urgent proclamation for humiliation, fasting and prayer was called by the Senate and President Lincoln reminded the people that only a nation whose God is Lord can hope to survive. What do you think is missing in America in this same scenario?

Lincoln wrote after discouraging days of personal sorrow and military defeats, comments that also appear in Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address of 1865. John Hay, one of Lincoln's secretaries, said that in this writing, "Mr. Lincoln admits us into the most secret recesses of his soul .... Perplexed and afflicted beyond the power of human help, by the disasters of war,...he shut out the world one day, and tried to put into form his double sense of responsibility to human duty and Divine Power; and this was the result. It shows -- the awful sincerity of a perfectly honest soul, trying to bring itself into closer communion with its Maker." Unfortunately, America's politics of today have left God out.

Nothing captures the nation’s attention more than the presidential elections. From the beginning, people have struggled to make sense of their civil society when the experimental form of American government was launched after winning the War for Independence. People have made the presidency nothing short of an imperial one while bypassing the other federal branches of government created with equal powers for the purpose of maintaining checks and balances. The new nation, with her experiment of civil government, was to be a continuation of their colonial liberties, justice and blessings just as the forefathers, the Pilgrims and Puritans, had envisioned. So what is missing to get America back.

About The Future of America

We want to help restore America's original foundation in biblical Christian principles which made it the most powerful and prosperous nation in the world in a relatively short time but America has not reached it full potential. Ideas have consequences and they are passed on from generation to generation. To eradicate error, the moral and ethical principles of the Bible must be firmly established in the hearts and minds of each individual. If America is going to survive, its citizens must become re-acquainted with its history, heritage and biblical immovable principles and apply them once again to all areas of life. We hope this program will inspire and challenge you so together we can fulfill our responsibility before God and country to make the difference for our generation many generations to come.
