Humans: The Artists

Stone tools and artifacts survive much longer than wooden or organic items, which can give a misleading impression of early humans as primitive brutes. However, evidence like the sophisticated cave paintings at Lascaux shows that prehistoric people possessed artistic skill, culture, and intelligence.

Jonathan Cotton: Meet an ancient artist, next on today's creation moments. And now, here's our Creation Moments host, Ian Taylor.

Ian T. Taylor: Which is more likely to be buried in the ground for a few thousand years? A wooden spoon or a stone hammer? Since the hammer will last long after the wood has decayed, the further back we go in man's history, the more likely we are to find only the most durable things that man has left behind. This general principle explains why those who believe in evolution talk about Stone Age man. They often portray so-called Stone Age man as a primitive brute who carried a club around, grunted a lot, and was definitely in need of a bath.

Those of us who know that man has always been man know that this picture is inaccurate. It's unfortunate that, for example, the toys that our earliest ancestors undoubtedly made for their children or their literature has not been preserved to our day. Do you think it sounds strange to talk about Stone Age man's literature? Yet modern science does recognize his art. Over 220 paintings are found in Lascaux Cave, France alone. Research reveals that the men who created this beautiful and sensitive art did so using artificial lighting, palettes, and scaffolding. He carefully milled and mixed minerals to create a variety of colors that remained bright and rich thousands of years later.

As we look at the paintings left by so-called Stone Age man, we can clearly see that the claims that man has progressed up from a brutal animal stage are quite false.
