Dr. Darryl A. Burton Sr.: right here. Let's go and celebrate the Lord on today. For this is the day that the Lord has made. He said, let us rejoice and be glad in it. Come on, let's celebrate the Lord on today. Amen. Are you glad to be here on today? Are you glad to be here on today? Are you glad to be here on today? Amen. I do not care what happened last night. I do not care what happened last week. I'm here today only by the grace of God. And because of that, we are going to celebrate the Lord on today. And I just ask that you celebrate with me because the Bible declares when two or more are gathered in his name, he will be in the midst of us. Amen. So let's welcome the presence of the Lord this morning by putting our hands together and welcome the presence of the Lord.

Say, Lord, thank you for coming to bless us today. Thank you for coming to fall fresh upon us today. Thank you for waking us up today. Thanking that we're still clothed in our right mind today, Lord God. Thank you for this body that you have given us, Lord God. To lift up our holy hands before our awesome God. And to say, thank you, Lord God. We love you. We praise you. We magnify you, Lord God. We glorify your name on today, Lord God. Because you are worthy of all the praise and the honor and the glory.

Amen. So I'm excited as always to come to stand behind the sacred desk, amen, and to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ. Amen. I'm just one of them that's in the Lord today. I want to pass in the spirit of the Lord today. I want you to join me and just open your hearts, amen, and allow the Lord to come into your hearts on today, as we magnify his name. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Thank you, Lord. Hallelujah.

I just come to worship. Hallelujah. I come to give you praise, Lord God. Hallelujah. I come to magnify your name. Hallelujah. I could be anywhere else. I could be dead and I could be down in the grave. I come to give you the best praise. Hallelujah, Lord God. Thank you, Lord God, for loving me. Thank you for looking beyond my faults and seeing my needs. Hallelujah. Thank you, Lord God.

I call to worship this morning is the entire 121st Psalm. The entire 121st Psalm. It says, I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where come, where does my help come from? My help from, might say my help. My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot to slip. He will watch over you. And will not let you slumber. Indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord watches over you. The Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun would not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm. He will watch over you, your life. The Lord will watch over your coming and going, both now and forevermore. Let the people of God say, amen. And amen. And amen. Come on, Brother Cam, let's go higher in our praise and worship on this morning. Come on, let's give God some praise.

Guest (Female Singer/Speaker): Amen. I chose this song basically because it was my birthday. And, you can hear from the song the reason why I chose it.

Guest (Female Singer/Speaker): Your grace and mercy brought me through. I'm living this morning because of you. I want to thank you. And praise you too. Your grace and mercy brought me through. Thank you for saving a sinner like me to tell the world salvation is free. There have been times when I I just didn't do right.

Dr. Darryl A. Burton Sr.: Yes, sir.

Guest (Female Singer/Speaker): But you, you watched over me all day and night.

Dr. Darryl A. Burton Sr.: Yes, Lord. Thank you.

Guest (Female Singer/Speaker): Your grace and mercy.

Dr. Darryl A. Burton Sr.: Come on, sing the chorus.

Guest (Female Singer/Speaker): Your grace and mercy brought me through. I'm living this morning. I'm living this morning. Because of who? Because of you. I want to thank you, Jesus. I want to thank you. And praise you too. Your grace and mercy. Your grace and mercy brought me through. Justice demanded that I should die. But grace, grace and mercy said. No, no, no, no, no. We've already paid the price.

Dr. Darryl A. Burton Sr.: Hallelujah. Yes. Sing it.

Guest (Female Singer/Speaker): I once was blind.

Dr. Darryl A. Burton Sr.: That's right. Hallelujah. Yes.

Guest (Female Singer/Speaker): But thank God, I can see. It was because grace and mercy.

Dr. Darryl A. Burton Sr.: Yes, Lord. Hallelujah. Grace and mercy.

Guest (Female Singer/Speaker): Came alone.

Dr. Darryl A. Burton Sr.: Came alone.

Guest (Female Singer/Speaker): And rescued.

Dr. Darryl A. Burton Sr.: Rescued.

Guest (Female Singer/Speaker): Rescued me. And rescued me. Because grace and mercy. Grace and mercy came along. And rescued, rescued me.

Dr. Darryl A. Burton Sr.: It was because grace and mercy.

Guest (Female Singer/Speaker): Grace and mercy. Came alone.

Dr. Darryl A. Burton Sr.: Yes. Came along.

Guest (Female Singer/Speaker): You rescued. Rescued me. Because it was grace and mercy.

Dr. Darryl A. Burton Sr.: Grace and mercy.

Guest (Female Singer/Speaker): Came along. And brought me through.

Dr. Darryl A. Burton Sr.: Hallelujah. Come on, let's give God some praise. Give God some praise. Because of grace and mercy. Give us more than that, Lord. Give us more than that, Lord. Give us more than that. That's grace and mercy. Hallelujah. You know that I know. It's because of God's grace and his mercy. I haven't been all that God has called me to be over that last 64 years. That last 64 years, I have not been all that God has called me to be.

But I realize that it is because of the grace and mercy that God has given me over to my life. And because I know that I can cry out to God for forgiveness of sin, and he will forgive me in order to be able to change my mind and operate under his grace. Amen. When I think about the grace of Jesus, and all that he has done for me. And in 64, I realized that it is the grace and the mercy of God that has allowed me to see last verse that at 65 years. Amen. It is grace and mercy. If you do not know about grace and mercy, amen, if you're still living under the law, you do not know about grace and mercy. Amen.

But if you need to find out about grace and mercy, read the life of Jesus, and then go further into Romans. The book of Romans is all about grace and mercy. Amen.

Dr. Darryl A. Burton Sr.: Amen. That the church say amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. That's it. Does that song resonate with us? Grace and mercy. Yeah. Grace and mercy. Yeah. Came along. Rescued. It came along when we were in our sin. It came along when we were down and out. It came along when we didn't know how we were going to make it. It did what? It rescued. Somebody say rescued. It rescued us. Amen.

Join me in a word of prayer. Father, we want to thank you for this preaching moment. Now may the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable unto you. Open our hearts, Lord God. If you have to take a can opener, take the can opener and open hearts right now. Lord God, hearts that's hard. Hearts that's been hurt, hearts that's been abused, Lord God. Open hearts now, Lord God. And pour, Lord God, into your servant that I may pour into your people, Lord God, this word that you're giving me.

And we thank you now, Lord God, for the grace and mercy that you will extend unto your servant as I stand behind your sacred desk. Lord God, just to simply proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ. We love you. We thank you. We honor you on this day. Let every heart say this morning. Amen. Amen. And amen. Again, I want to thank all of you for your presence here on today. We're grateful. We are excited. We are here. And because we are here, we are here, amen, not to come, amen, and entertain you, but to give you a word, amen, that will encourage your soul, amen, on today.

Last week, amen, we preached from Esther chapter 4. And that sermon, amen, was entitled, "Will You Make A Difference?" "Will You Make A Difference?" We also disclosed Esther during our Bible study this past week and got further insight other of the importance of speaking up when injustices are occurring in our community. So today, we will shift from the Old Testament to the New Testament. I want to thank Sister Kareem for reading our scripture on this morning.

I want to do something that I typically don't do, but I want to do this because when I read this particular passage from The Message Bible, it sounded really aggressive and it sounded really, it I can't give, I can't think of the word, but it really grabbed me, Brother Eddin, when I read this text out of The Message Bible. Amen. I do most of my preaching from the NIV, but I want you to hear verses 3, 4, 5 and 6, amen, of the Second Corinthians chapter 5 from The Message Bible. It says the world is undisciplined. It says the world is unprincipled, excuse me.

It's dog eat dog out there. The world doesn't fight fair. But we don't live or fight our battles that way. Never have and never will. The tools of our trade aren't for marketing or manipulation, but they are for demolishing that the entire massive corrupt culture. We use our powerful God tools for smashing warped philosophies, tearing down barriers, erecting against the truth of God, fitting every loose thought and emotion and impulse into structure of life shaped by Christ.

Our tools are ready at hand for clearing the ground of every obstruction and building lives of of obedience unto maturity. Ain't that something? The way that that is written, the way that is communicated. But we will fix our minds and fix our thoughts on this morning on verse number 5 of Second Corinthians chapter 10, which says, amen, "We demolish arguments. Every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God. And we take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ." Amen.

So this morning, amen, allow me to preach a little while from the subject, "Take Every Thought Captive." "Take Every Thought Captive." Turn to your neighbor and tell them, "Take Every Thought Captive." Yeah, yeah, yeah. Take Every Thought Captive. Amen. There are battles fought with tanks and missiles. Yesterday another battle broke out between the U.S. and Iran. And I'm not prepared to give a full analysis of that situation on today, amen, because I need more information.

I don't know about you, but I need more information. So I won't get on that soap box today. I won't preach about if it should have been done or not done. Amen. I'll let that simmer just for a little while. But nevertheless, battles, somebody say battles. Battles are indeed fought with tanks and missiles and lives are ultimately lost. But then there are battles fought in silence. Battles that occur in the corridors of our minds.

Battles that infiltrate our thought processes. And some of you right now are probably fighting a battle in your mind. Nearly every decision you are making is an act of war. Long before human behavior manifests publicly, Sister Phyllis, it is conceived privately, premeditated, then a public act. Spiritually, before sin becomes action, it entertains as a thought.

Before before defeat shows up in life, it has already taken root in the imagination and thoughts of our minds. Are you all with me this morning? In our text, Paul writes in Second Corinthians chapter 10 verse 3 through 6, not to soldiers on a physical battlefield, but to believers engaged in a spiritual battle. We are at war, my brothers and sisters, both physically and spiritually. This war is real. This is not a pretend. This is not a fake. This is not a something that is is not real. It's a real battle that we are in.

The enemy is strategic. Just ask Jesus, if you if we could, we could ask Jesus this, because for 40 days and for 40 nights, the enemy sought Jesus at his lowest point, whereby he could attack him by encouraging Jesus to turn stone into bread. Yes, the enemy is strategic. And I want to suggest to us, as George Myers did a few years ago, that the battlefield is in the mind.

Paul writes here in Second Corinthians chapter 3 verse, uh, chapter 10 verse 3, "For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh." The NIV says it this way, "For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does." The Message Bible says, "The world is unprincipled. It's a dog eat dog world out there. The world doesn't fight fair." Therefore, we must take every thought, somebody say take every thought, and make it captive.

Before we discover how to take every thought and make it captive, we must look at this church called Corinth and consider why Paul wishes to address this matter with these believers. Historically, Paul is writing to this church, amen. It was a gifted church, but it was a troubled congregation. They were troubled. And the reason simply is because Corinthian, amen, was a a cosmopolitan city, amen. It was an intellectual city, amen. It was morally loose city, amen, heavily influenced by Greek, uh, philosophies and Greek pride, amen.

And what concerned Paul, amen, was the first apostles had infiltrated the church, questioning Paul's authority in Second Corinthians chapter 10, verse 10. If you remember, Paul's authority came into question, amen, as he was on the road of Damascus. You all know the story in Acts chapter 9. Before he was Paul, he was known as Saul. And he sought to kill the Christians on his journey. However, Saul met Jesus in Acts chapter 9.

And as they say, the rest is history. So Saul's conversion experience did not sit well, Sister Elizabeth, with a whole lot of folks. They thought it was no way that he could go from killing Christians to becoming an advocate of Jesus Christ. I want to make a point right here, is that Jesus can turn our lives 360 degrees all the way around. Do I have a witness out there? Jesus can take you from being what you were to being something brand new.

And that is why people began to come into the church and speak against Paul's teaching. There are a couple of things that this church of Corinth found themselves doing. They found themselves living by worldly standards. They judged leadership by charisma and outward appearance. The Greco-Roman society, public speakers or orators were admired as celebrities. Persuasive speech was the marker of power.

So when Paul did not match the cultural ideals of communicating presence, some questioned his legitimacy as an apostle. Then there was intellectual pride, amen. The Greek culture exalted philosophies and human reasonings above revelation. That means arguments were evaluated based upon how persuasive it sounded, not relevant by how it aligns with God's revealed truth. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

And then there was spiritual immaturity. Paul had already said that he, amen, called this church carnal in First Corinthians chapter 3, verse 1 through 3. To sum it up, amen, in these verses, he could not give the church solid food, for they were not ready for it. Just like a young infant, a young baby, amen, eat those soft potatoes, Sister Kareem, or those carrots, and that breast milk, that is all our infant can handle, amen.

So Paul said that these believers were living as the world lives and were not ready for the solid food of God's word. Paul understood something foundational with these believers, and this is what he understood, that if Satan can influence your thinking, he can influence your living. If Satan can influence your thinking, he can influence your living.

He can influence how you treat one another. He can influence how you love your neighbor. He can influence if whether or not you tithe or not. He can influence whether you serve or not serve. You remember Eve, don't you, in the Garden of Genesis? Satan even Satan has been influencing people for a very, very, very long time. And he is not done with his attempts to influence you.

Just like Jesus, amen. Satan will attempt to get you to oppose the Lord. Satan will attempt to get you to oppose living a life that pleases God. Satan will attempt to convince you that God does not love you, that God does not care about you and your struggles. But I'm here to tell you on this morning, amen, that God, amen, does care about you. And that devil is a liar. Come on, you all. The devil is a liar.

The devil I don't think you all hear me this morning. Amen. All the stuff the enemy is saying to you and saying about you is a lie. Amen. Paul shares with us this passage a few things that I believe that will help us to take every thought captive on this morning. The first thing we see is that Paul says again in verse number 3, "For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does." My first observation, amen, this morning, of us taking every thought captive is that we must understand that the battle starts in your mind before it shows up in your behavior.

The battle starts in your mind before it shows up in your behavior. In other words, Sister Antoinette, before you do it, you think it. Come on somebody. Before you do it, you must think it. Cognitive behavior professional Aaron Beck, the founder of cognitive behavior therapy, built his entire clinical framework on this principle. And here's the principle, you all. Distorted thinking produces distorted behavior and emotional suffering.

What Beck's research demonstrate is that depression, anxiety, and destructive behavior are not random. They are preceded by what he called automatic thoughts, internal interpretations, and narratives that feels natural, but often are inadequate. Let me make it plain. Can I make it plain on this morning? Our thoughts are shaped by our emotions. Our emotions influence our behavior. Therefore, correcting thought patterns often behavioral outcomes. Did you all get what I just said?

Can I say it one more time? Our thoughts shape our emotions. Our emotions influence our behavior. Therefore, somebody say therefore. Correcting thought patterns often behavioral outcomes. That is why Paul says in Romans 12 and verse 2, "Do not be conformed any longer where, to the patterns of this world, but be what? Transformed by the renewing of what? Your mind." I don't think you all hear me this morning. He tells you, don't get caught up in the world.

Don't get caught up in what you see on CNN. Don't get caught up in what they doing down the street at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Don't get caught up on the patterns of this world, but be ye transformed. Somebody need to say transformed. Be transformed by the renewing of your mind. My second observation is that to take every thought captive, we should understand that strongholds are lies we believe so long that they feel like the truth.

Can I say it one more time? Strongholds are lies we believe so long they feel like the truth. In other words, strongholds is a long-term lie. You all aren't praying with me this morning. A stronghold is a long-term lie. It is what we choose to believe, Sister Elizabeth, even though it's a lie. Some of us have built mental fortress out of repeated lies, pain, and pride.

A fortress is a wall, isn't it? It's a gate. It's a it's devices that hold things in. These fortresses are reinforced over time by repeated patterns, emotional investments, and other social and cultural validations. There are people, did you all know this? There are people who need other people to validate them. There are people who need other people to validate them. This is a stronghold. This is deep, you all. This stronghold thing is very deep, amen.

And George Clinton would say that it's not just knee-deep. It's very deep. And there is good news, amen. There is good news, because Paul says and he informs us in verse number 4, "The weapons we fight with are not weapons of this world." Hallelujah somebody. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish, somebody say demolish, strongholds. Yeah, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. Theologically, a stronghold is merely a sinful habit.

It is fortified worldview resistance of divine truth. Let me say that again. It is a fortified worldview resistance of divine truth. It is deeply entrenched in the framework of thought and belief that opposes God's truth. Are you all with me? Satan wants you to believe that you'll never be good enough. God doesn't care about my situation, that this this sin thing I'm wrestling with is only because of who I am.

Those are lies from the pit of hell, somebody. Come on. Those are lies that Satan try to get you to think about and convince yourself they are truth, but they are not. We have to remind ourselves that the enemy gets into our head. We must tell that the tell us that we're not good enough. But my God tells me that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. When we have to tell ourselves that God cares for us, scriptures tells us that he chose the broken, he has close to the brokenhearted, and he crushed those, he has with those who are crushed in spirit.

We have to tell ourselves that the sin issue that I'm facing is not who I am. God told Cain, you all remember Cain, don't you? God told Cain that sin is crouching at your door, and it desires to have you. But God said that you must master it. How do we master it, Reverend Kim, and take captive of the thoughts in our minds? And I'm glad that you asked me that on this morning. It's right here in verse number 5.

As I begin to land this plane, it says, "We have the power to demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God." My third observation this morning, that if you're going to take every thought captive, you must know that victory, somebody say victory, victory begins with my thought says, "Yes, Lord." Victory begins with my thought says, "Yes, Lord." You all ain't praying with me this morning.

Victory, somebody say victory. Victory begins with my thought says, "Yes, Lord." Victory is not passive. It is intentional. My mind is the gatekeeper of my soul. When thoughts are captured by Christ, the strongholds fall. The lies are silenced. The life aligns with God's truth. But strongholds have to be torn down. Strongholds have to be demolished. Strongholds have to be destroyed.

And stronghold has to be dismantled. Oh, I want to live in victory. Don't you want to live in victory? Don't you want to live in victory on this morning? I'm so glad that you do. But you got to tear down those strongholds. You got to demolish those strongholds. You got to destroy those strongholds. You got to dismantle those strongholds in your life, amen. The battle is won, not the battle is won once, amen, we begin to demolish the lies, dismantle the pretensions, and let every thought bow to the knowledge of God.

Paul says, "Take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ." That tells me that I'm on the offense and not on the defense. That tells me I'm moving forward and not moving back. That tells me that my God is in front of me and he's showing me the way. And not me looking back at my past sins, my past life, the things I've done wrong. That I'm pressing on towards the mark of the high calling, which is in Christ Jesus.

I'm praying, you all, and I'm preaching hard, amen. But I'm here to let somebody know today, don't look back, but look forward. Don't look back at what you've done wrong, because we all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. But thanks be to God because of his grace and his mercy. You are here today because he loves you. He cares for you. He adores you. And he got a battle ready for you to fight. But you got to demolish those old things.

Demolish and dismantle those old things that the enemy tried to get you to believe that you're still in a bad place. God has empowered us to stand firm. God has empowered us to stand firm. And what I need you to do, amen, when Satan start talking crazy to you, amen. What I need you to do is to, number one, name that lie. Name that lie. Somebody say name that lie. Not name that song, but name that lie.

Whatever the lie that Satan tried to tell you, name it, amen. And the next thing I want you to do is confront that lie with God's Word. Look at what God's Word says about you, amen, and not what Satan is trying to convince you you are. And then the last thing you need to do is surrender that thought in prayer. Go to the go to the Lord in prayer and let the Lord know that my thoughts belong to Jesus. I'm closing, you all.

Right now God is calling you to take every thought captive. Every lie that whispers you are not good enough. Every doubt that comes in your mind. Every prideful ideal that exalts itself above God. Bring it before God in prayer. Surrender your mind to Christ, you all. And let the truth demolish every stronghold that comes across your mind. Step into the freedom he offers today and declare my thoughts belong to Jesus Christ. Come on, let's give God some praise, amen. For his Word on today. Take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ. The doors of the church are open. The doors of the church are open on this morning.

And if you're here and if this is your battle, because we all are in battles, I'm going to ask that you stand to your feet, my brothers and sisters. We all are in battles. We are in battles every day. And every decision sometimes feel like an act of war. But I want to invite you on today, if you are here and if you are watching, amen. Amen. And don't know Jesus and a pardoner of your sins, because again, we all have sinned and what? Fallen short of the glory of God.

But thanks be to God, that God's arms and hands are long enough to pick you up from your despair and your sin. And you can come to him right now. Romans 10 and 9 says, "If you confess with your mouth and believe in your heart that Jesus is Lord and that God raised him from the dead," the Bible declares that you are saved. So is there one today that want to accept Jesus as Lord? I see everybody here are believers, amen. You accepted Christ. I want you all to be seated, amen, in the presence of the Lord. Thank you, amen.

But I want to talk to those who are watching near and far. This may be a call for you. So I'm going to ask my son, amen, just to put up the, uh, if you want to accept Christ, put up the text the word join from your mobile device to 240-269-5193. Text the word join to 240-269-5193. There you will see a video of how you now become a disciple of Christ. And we want to reach out to you. We want to get in touch with you. So get in touch with us.

If you want to rededicate yourself to Christ. But perhaps someone, amen, have fallen off, gotten away from studying, gotten away from praying, gotten away from engaging in the spiritual principles that will draw us closer to God. Perhaps that's you. Perhaps the world, all your thoughts have come in your mind and and how you want to live your life, amen. God will let you live your life, but sooner or later, somebody say sooner or later. Sooner or later, Jesus said that every knee shall bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is what? Is Lord. So I would rather do it sooner than later. So if that's you, you can also text the word join to 240-269-5193.

And certainly we want to thank all of you who are out there that want to be affiliated with our ministry. Reach out to me at 240-360-0977. That's the number to the church. Just call me and say, "How can I participate? How can I be affiliated with your ministry? What can I do to help you continue to have major impact in your community?" We welcome that. We open our arms to that. Again that number is the church number, 240-360-0977. Amen. Come on, let's give God some praise, amen.

I failed to say earlier that this is Communion Sunday, amen. It is.

Dr. Darryl A. Burton Sr.: Let us pray. Father God, we thank you for what we have experienced today. We thank you, Lord God, for your presence here today. We thank you now, Lord God, that you will bless us as we go out into our places where we dwell, where we work, where we congregate. And Lord God, let us remember, oh, Lord God, that you love us. That the lies of the enemy, Lord God, are not true concerning us.

We will, Lord God, look to you because you are the author and finisher of our faith. Now to him who is able to keep us from falling and to present us before his glorious throne without fault, with majesty, power, and dominion, through Jesus Christ our Lord, both now and forevermore. Let the people of God say, amen. Amen. Amen. Come on, give God some praise one more time. God bless you. God keep you. May heaven continually smile upon you. We love you. We look forward to seeing you again on next week. God bless you. Amen.
