As Paul wrote to the Philippians, the source of his joy had changed from glorying in his own standing as a Jewish leader, to glorying in the righteousness of Jesus Christ. Trusting totally in Christ is our security.

The theme of the entire book of Philippians is joy. Paul preached that true joy comes through making Jesus Christ the center of your life, and by serving others. Jesus modeled this by being the servant of all.

Giving to God reaps an eternal reward, and you can't outgive God. But if God doesn't have your heart, He doesn't want your money. He doesn't need it. If He has your heart, your giving will naturally follow.

Paul commended the Philippians because, although they weren't with him on the mission field, they shared in his work by their sacrificial giving to support him. He called their generosity "a sweet--smelling aroma... well pleasing to God."

If anyone had a reason to lament his circumstances, it is the Apostle Paul. He suffered repeated beatings and imprisonments, and he was in jail as he wrote to the Philippians. Yet, he expressed contentment.

The qualities listed in Philippians 4:8-9—- true, noble, just, pure, and so on—- are a perfect description of Jesus Christ Himself. So, as you practice these qualities, you are emulating the Lord.
