Standing in the Gap Part 2

December 18, 2007
In 1 Timothy 2, we are told to speak to God in supplications, prayers, intercessions and giving of thanks. Prayer is good, and it is pleasing to God. Further, it is effective—as shown when the believers prayed for Peter when he was in prison.

Praying in Jesus' name is more than just tacking on some words at the end of our prayers. Using Jesus' name in prayer is to appropriate his authority—and it should mean we are living in conformity with the will of God. The important question is: Are we?

Why would God refuse to answer our prayers? We ourselves can put up barriers to receiving answers. One such barrier is unforgiveness—harboring a grudge against someone. Another is selfishness, which the book of James calls "asking amiss."

They say that prayer changes things. But there are times when prayer just doesn't work, when heaven is silent. God looks upon prayer as a matter of the heart, and He has said that he will not hear our prayers when we have unconfessed sin in our lives.
December 5, 2007
God established prayer as an avenue of communication with Him, so that we can share in what He wants to do. The purpose of prayer is not to get our will done, but to get God's will done on earth—and in the process, to give us the peace that passes understanding.
