Today we celebrate our freedom as a nation. We are blessed with national independence and an abundance of personal freedoms. Yet within the boundaries of a free nation, there are still many who lack true freedom.

If anyone knew suffering, it was Paul. He was beaten, stoned, whipped, shipwrecked, put into prison, and ridiculed. Based on human logic, we would assume that Paul would have come to a point of feeling abandoned by God; on the contrary, Paul was even more convinced that God is the God of all comfort.

Our modern society tries to avoid pain in any shape or form; it's difficult for us to imagine that any type of pain could be beneficial. Is it possible for pain to serve a purpose? The Apostle Paul certainly believed it could!

After experiencing great loss and extreme pain, Job said, "Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him" (Job 13:15). There is sometimes a temptation to grow bitter when we go through hard times, but there is also an opportunity to grow stronger and closer to the Lord. Will you, like Job, trust God no matter what?
