After the people had made a covenant to follow God, Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem to find they had backslidden. Moses experienced this also, with the Israelites in the desert, and so did Paul, with the churches he established.

The purpose of church discipline is to win a person's soul, and to restore them to the body of Christ. The tough discipline of Nehemiah is reminiscent of the way Jesus cleansed the temple.

In Nehemiah's absence, the priest gave one of his enemies a residence on the temple grounds. This illustrates what happens to our spiritual lives if we don't watch over them: They deteriorate.

The second part of Nehemiah 12 details the dedication of the wall, and the joyful praise that filled the service, with music and singing. That's the way it should be whenever God's people meet together.

Nehemiah 12 specifically names the gatekeepers of the city, to show that the lowliest job is important to the Lord. As the Psalm says, "I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness."

Biblically, Jerusalem is the center of world, in a geographic, spiritual, and prophetic sense. And it will be the center of God's glory in eternity—but it will be a New Jerusalem, not the city rebuilt by Nehemiah.

Jerusalem was rebuilt, but it was only sparsely occupied. The leaders were there, but they needed more citizens—for trade and for security. They drew lots for who would live in the city, as a kind of "tithe" of people.

The people in Nehemiah 10 promised not to intermarry with the nations around them, and they pledged to keep the Sabbath. Further, they promised to present their tithes and offerings—which meant they trusted God to provide.

In Nehemiah 10, the people made a covenant to the Lord. It was based on Scripture, and it was made in public, to make them accountable to each other. They understood their tendency to stray from the Law of God.

The reason Easter is so joyous is because of what happened on Good Friday, when Jesus voluntarily gave His life for the sins of all the world. It is because of this act that we can, with Jesus, address God as "Father."

Not only was Job's hope in a person, a "Redeemer," but it was a personal hope. He called Him "my Redeemer" and he knew without question that he would see God. The question today is: Is He your Redeemer?
