Nehemiah's story ends as he contends with the people over their straying from the Lord. They had become secular, greedy and lax in their faith, and Nehemiah knew a fire needs to be tended or it will go out.

After the people had made a covenant to follow God, Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem to find they had backslidden. Moses experienced this also, with the Israelites in the desert, and so did Paul, with the churches he established.

The purpose of church discipline is to win a person's soul, and to restore them to the body of Christ. The tough discipline of Nehemiah is reminiscent of the way Jesus cleansed the temple.

In Nehemiah's absence, the priest gave one of his enemies a residence on the temple grounds. This illustrates what happens to our spiritual lives if we don't watch over them: They deteriorate.

Nehemiah 12 specifically names the gatekeepers of the city, to show that the lowliest job is important to the Lord. As the Psalm says, "I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness."
