A hunger for righteousness is a desire for a right standing before God. Those with this desire won't try to escape the world, and they won't feel intimidated by it. And God promises they will be filled.

What are you passionate about? In the Beatitudes, the hunger for righteousness speaks of an intense, all--consuming passion, like Moses asking to see God's glory, or like Paul's plea, "Oh, that I might know Him."

Jesus promises that the meek will be blessed, and that they will inherit the earth. But beyond that, meekness is necessary for us to witness effectively to the world, and for the church to function smoothly.

Meekness is not weakness or timidity; it is power that is kept under control. Jesus had been given all power by the Father, yet he said, "I am meek and lowly in heart." And He is the one who washed the disciples' feet.

The Beatitude "Blessed are those who mourn" reminds us of the story of the Pharisee and the tax collector. The Pharisee pridefully exalted himself. But the tax collector mourned over his sins, and he was forgiven.

When Jesus said, "Blessed are the poor in spirit," he was describing the right attitude toward our own righteousness. To be poor in spirit is to recognize that you are spiritually bankrupt before God.

The people who heard the Sermon on the Mount came for different reasons, with different expectations. But Jesus was really addressing his disciples. The King was telling them how to live in His Kingdom.

As Paul wrote to the Philippians, the source of his joy had changed from glorying in his own standing as a Jewish leader, to glorying in the righteousness of Jesus Christ. Trusting totally in Christ is our security.

The theme of the entire book of Philippians is joy. Paul preached that true joy comes through making Jesus Christ the center of your life, and by serving others. Jesus modeled this by being the servant of all.
