There are four benchmarks of spiritual growth. The first is, of course, to be saved. Then we must serve one another. And we must be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Finally, we must be sent out into the world.

How can you be an encourager? You can encourage by giving of your finances, by being a friend, and by taking newer believers under your wing and helping them mature. When Barnabas brought Paul up to Antioch to help in his ministry there, he was encouraging the man who would later write half of the New Testament.

Encouragement greases the wheels of relationships; it's like water to a parched soul. The ministry of Barnabas, whose name means "son of encouragement," was vital to the growth of Paul as the apostle to the Gentiles. It is so important that if we didn't have Barnabas, we wouldn't have Paul.

Prior to his ministry and his missionary journeys, the Apostle Paul spent years in privacy, difficulty, and obscurity. He was a target for the Jewish leaders, and he was distrusted by the disciples of Jesus. Yet, God was preparing him for greatness.

Following his conversion, the Apostle Paul spent a long period in obscurity. Like David and Moses before him, he spent years on the backside of the desert, being prepared by God for service. And like them, he came out profoundly changed.

When we come to Christ, that's just the beginning of a process. God is interested in the long term. We must spend time with Lord privately, make connections with the body of Christ corporately, and then share with the world their need for Christ. But we must be prepared for the inevitable result—becoming a target.

God's plan is always to save a person, and then to do more with them. After Paul's conversion to faith in Christ, he had to be prepared for service to the Lord. He spent time praying, in fellowship with other believers, and then preaching that Jesus was the Messiah. But in the process, the former hunter of Christians became the target of the Jewish leaders.

When Jesus confronted Paul on the road to Damascus, he said that Paul was persecuting Him, not His followers. In a moment, Paul understood both that Jesus was Lord, and that it was useless to resist Him. And he asked this vital question: "Lord, what do you want me to do?"

Why would God allow Stephen, one of the early church's best men, to be executed for professing his faith in Jesus Christ? One part of the answer is that He was preparing for the eventual salvation of Paul the Apostle. Paul never forgot the sight of the execution, and it would haunt him for the rest of his life.
