Christmas Eve Service Part 1

December 24, 2007
Join Skip Heitzig for a Christmas Eve service at Calvary of Albuquerque. The popular image of the baby in the manger is at odds with the truth of life in first century Israel. The stable would, in actuality, have been a cave; the manger would have been carved out of stone. But the essential humility of the birth of Jesus remains true.

The woman at the well in John 4 made two mistakes about worship: God cannot be confined to a place, like a mountain or a city. And God cannot be reduced to an image. Using an image dishonors God, because it is always less than who He truly is.

Worship is the highest form of communication with God. But our worship must be acceptable to God, the one we seek to honor. We must not rely on images, but we must "worship in spirit and in truth," as Jesus tells the woman at the well in John 4.

In 1 Timothy 2, we are told to speak to God in supplications, prayers, intercessions and giving of thanks. Prayer is good, and it is pleasing to God. Further, it is effective—as shown when the believers prayed for Peter when he was in prison.

Intercession is praying for other people and their needs, and it is encouraged by Paul in First Timothy 2. Sometimes called "standing in the gap," it can be difficult, but it's one of the most important things you can do for another believer.

Skip Heitzig is in the studio with pastor and author Randy Alcorn. Randy will talk about the origin of his Eternal Perspective Ministries, the faulty, non-biblical ideas some Christians have about heaven, and the necessity of always keeping our eyes on the eternal.

Maintaining an attitude of thanksgiving in our lives shows we truly believe that God is good. It also shows that our lives are in balance—that our communication with the Lord is not all about our wants and our needs.
December 13, 2007
The news media, and the world in general, doesn't stress good news, the good things that happen. Yet, there is far more good than evil in our lives. As David demonstrates in Psalm 103, our response to God should be thanksgiving for all He has done.

Praying in Jesus' name is more than just tacking on some words at the end of our prayers. Using Jesus' name in prayer is to appropriate his authority—and it should mean we are living in conformity with the will of God. The important question is: Are we?

In John 14:13, Jesus promised that God would do whatever we ask in Jesus' name. "Whatever" means that no concern is too small for His notice, and we are allowed unlimited access to Him, as it says in Hebrews. Yet, there are boundaries to that promise.
