The Third Commandment forbids the use of God’s name as a swear word. But it’s more than just that. God’s name reveals His character, and to curse someone using God’s name is contrary to who He is.

It bothers some people that God calls Himself “jealous.” Yet, He also describes Himself as merciful and just. These attributes give us a much better image of Him than any statue or picture.

Why does God forbid the making of images to use in worship? Because no image can show the majesty or the glory of God. Images only serve to limit God and bring Him down to our level.
