We often idealize the early church and forget they were imperfect people, like us. As Paul and Barnabas planned a missionary journey, they had a conflict so strong that they parted company and went in separate directions.

In 2 Corinthians, Paul talks about being caught up into Heaven, and experiencing things that could make him prideful. Instead, he boasts about the things he has suffered for the gospel, and he tells how God gave him a "thorn in the flesh" to keep him humble. What was this thorn?

The Apostle Paul is preaching on his first missionary journey, and he faces strong opposition, to the point of being stoned and left for dead by the religious authorities. And this was not a unique experience—over his life, Paul was beaten many times for his boldness for Christ, and he also suffered through shipwrecks, hunger, and many kinds of danger.

A council of the early church discussed the difference between Jewish and Gentile believers in Jesus Christ. It decreed that the Word teaches Gentiles aren't under the law, but they shouldn't use their freedom to cause others to stumble. The grace of God should cause His followers to be gracious.

While Paul and Barnabas returned from their first missionary journey, they found the church at Jerusalem was being divided. Certain believers were saying that new converts had to follow the laws of Moses as well as believing in Christ. This question still rings today: Is faith in Jesus Christ enough for salvation, or does God require something more in addition?

There are four benchmarks of spiritual growth. The first is, of course, to be saved. Then we must serve one another. And we must be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Finally, we must be sent out into the world.

What is a church? Is it the people or the building? In the first century, the word "church" meant a group of saved individuals who met together. Skip focuses on the church at Antioch, a group of Gentiles who sent Paul on his first missionary journey.

How can you be an encourager? You can encourage by giving of your finances, by being a friend, and by taking newer believers under your wing and helping them mature. When Barnabas brought Paul up to Antioch to help in his ministry there, he was encouraging the man who would later write half of the New Testament.

Encouragement greases the wheels of relationships; it's like water to a parched soul. The ministry of Barnabas, whose name means "son of encouragement," was vital to the growth of Paul as the apostle to the Gentiles. It is so important that if we didn't have Barnabas, we wouldn't have Paul.
