Several Old Testament prophets asked, “Why do the wicked prosper and the righteous suffer?” A Levite named Asaph struggled with the same question. Although he struggled with this question to the point of feeling envious, through a process of worship, reason, and faith, he was able to conclude that God is good.

There is a famous quote by missionary Jim Elliot: "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose." On any given day, somewhere in the world, Christians are persecuted for their faith. The world cannot understand why Christians would risk their lives for their faith, but those who risk their lives know that something better than this life awaits them.

We often think of all the amazing things that happened, but did you know that this chapter also contains reports of persecution, persecution that happened to people with great faith? Like this chapter, the Christian life contains both joy and suffering.

People will pay thousands of dollars for things that once belonged to someone famous. Perhaps a size 2 evening gown or celebrity footprints make lovely decorations, but those things will eventually pass away. The love of God is free and unconditional, and it will last forever.
