Forsaken, Yet Not Forsaken

April 9, 2024

Have you ever been at a place in your life where you felt forgotten or forsaken, totally alone? It’s a painful place to be, a place where you feel no one understands or “feels your pain.” But one person does understand, and has felt your pain and has conquered death for you so that you can have eternal life.

Those who are in Christ have been justified before God. But salvation means much more; it means that we are sanctified, that God actually leads us into holiness. As Michael Allen and company explain, our holiness is carried out in the present work of our sovereign, loving God. In Christ we are given life, not simply in name, but in fact. Praise the Lord, who delivers His children through every weakness. Though you struggle with sin, do not be discouraged; it is God who works in you, "both to will and to work for his good pleasure" (Phil. 2:13).

For years, the Berlin Wall separated citizens of East Germany from family members in West Germany. Families once divided were reunited when the wall finally came down. Sadly, many churches, Christians, and denominations have built barriers preventing fellowship with other believers. How can we tear down the walls that divide us, reestablish true Christian unity, and live as brothers and sisters in the Lord? Let's find out!

The enemies of Jesus learned about the resurrection before His followers did. The soldiers charged with guarding the tomb found it empty and feared the punishment that awaited them. But rather than being punished they were rewarded for their silence. Join Dr. James Boice next time on The Bible Study Hour as he takes us through the reactions to the resurrection.

Despite Israel’s sin and unbelief, God prepares to reconcile her to Himself through the obedience of his Servant in this third Servant Song. The servant of Jehovah is described as the well instructed teacher who faced suffering and humiliation but trusted in God to vindicate Him. Reverend Alexander teaches God’s people to take on this same character in Hear the Word of God.

It’s hard for us to really embrace the idea that Jesus Christ was as much a man as he was God. But along with the miracles he performed as the Son of God, he also experienced humanity as deeply as we do...and one of the best examples we see is when he, while being crucified, was thirsty. Jesus was human after all, and if he was going save us, if he was going to die in our place, then he needed to be one of us to do it.

Dr. Barnhouse once met a woman who believed she would become an angel when she died. She was upset because he had contradicted this notion in one of his sermons. But he made her realize a much greater truth- that believers in Jesus Christ had been given the exalted title of sons and daughters of God and enjoy a position higher than the angels. Do you understand the wonderful privileges and blessings that are yours as a child of God?

The resurrection of Jesus Christ was the resurrection of a physical body. The disciples realized that when they touched Him, and it was that conviction that sent them into the world as messengers of the gospel. Join Dr. James Boice next time on The Bible Study Hour as he presents the evidence that Jesus was who He said He was, that He accomplished what He said He would do and that those who trust Him will live forever.

Israel laments over feeling forsaken, yet God tenderly reassures them of His unfailing love, as a mother to her nursing child. He will bring back His people, increase their numbers, extend salvation to the Gentiles, and contend with their enemies. Reverend Eric Alexander assures us that we can trust the One who keeps His covenant on Hear the Word of God.

As Jesus was growing up, his unique identity as the Son of God and his unique ministry as the Savior of the world must have made for some very interesting family situations. Certainly these family ties were strained during the course of his life, and they were broken altogether at the cross.
