Battling for What is Right Part 1

May 16, 2023

With regards to time you’re either wasting it, spending it or investing it. But a good portion of our lives it seems revolves around waiting. Is it really necessary? If so what do we do while we wait on the Lord? We’ll get some practical answers today on Abounding Grace. As we continue our series in Second Samuel David has been promised by God he will reign as king, but he is still having to wait for the fulfillment of that promise.  The way he handles this is noteworthy.

Humility
When Jesus "made himself nothing ... taking the nature of a servant," He modeled, for all believers, true humility. Murray calls this "our true nobility" and "the distinguishing feature of discipleship." In twelve brief but powerful chapters, Murray journeys through Scripture and Christ's life, underscoring the utmost need for humility---as opposed to pride---in the Christian's life. With insightful, penetrating clarity, Murray calls all Christians to turn from pride, empty themselves, and study the character of Christ to be filled with His grace. Often called the best work on humility ever written.

We’re in Second Samuel 2 today.  We all want to be successful in life, but how do you get there?  We’ll learn today it’s found as we seek the Lord.  The moment we go out on our own, in the flesh, we’ll fail miserably.  David would find this out the hard way.

Today we get right back into First Corinthians with pastor Ed Taylor on Abounding Grace.  We’re about to open chapter two, and receive an awesome model for ministry.  Whether you’re preaching the Word behind the pulpit, leading a small group Bible study, or directing traffic in the church parking lot, it’s important to realize we’re not to draw attention to ourselves.  All the glory and honor is to go to God, as we serve Him. That was something the apostle Paul understood very well.

In need of some wisdom today?  Sure, we all are!  And the place to turn for it is the Lord.  At the beginning of his reign David modeled this for us.  We’ll notice that spiritual success, in his life and ours, is linked to prayer.  If you’ll recall, David has been on the run for 10 years, and now that Saul has died, what’s next?  To answer that, David inquires of the Lord.  Good move!

Maybe you’ve noticed life is a real battle!  From our fight with the flesh, to the loss and hurt we so frequently encounter.  So how do you walk in victory, and get back up after you’ve been deeply hurt?  Today on Abounding Grace we’ll get some answers through a study in Second Samuel.

Today we embark on a new verse by verse journey through Second Samuel, here on Abounding Grace.  And the book begins with the death of Israel’s first King, Saul!  Some speculate that he committed suicide, others suggest the Amalekite finished him off.  And still others say that God did it.  Whatever conclusion you reach, pastor Ed will draw out some helpful lessons, like how to deal effectively with our flesh.

We're delving into some rather tough subjects:  Death, Suicide and Cremation!  Life lessons come in a variety of ways, and sometimes from unsuspecting sources.  David would learn a valuable lesson from the life of Saul as we’re about to see today.  God used King Saul in David’s life to teach a critical lesson, and that is what the end of the wicked will be and what unbridled sin leads to.  Saul didn’t end his life well, but that doesn’t have to be your story.

We’re dealing with a heavy subject today.  Maybe you or someone you know of is battling with suicidal thoughts.  We hope you’ll listen as pastor Ed Taylor has some encouraging words to share with you from First Samuel 31.  We’ll be looking at the tragic end to the life of King Saul.  Some speculate that he committed suicide, and so pastor Ed will take this opportunity to share God’s viewpoint on the matter.

We live in a world that is full of bad news, and it’s easy to fixate on that and become discouraged.  But today on Abounding Grace we draw your attention to the greatest news of all!  Of course I’m speaking of the Gospel, and how it is that God has chosen to save us.  Now that’s something to dwell upon!  Pastor Ed Taylor comes back to his series in First Corinthians and will not only point to the wise, powerful, yet simple Gospel, but man’s general response to it.

Last time on Abounding Grace we noticed a time in David’s life where he was greatly distressed.  And it came on the heels of him making a good and godly decision. Maybe that’s where you’re at today?  We’re about to learn the right response to being greatly distressed.  Pastor Ed Taylor has noticed four things in First Samuel 30.

Maybe like the man we’ll hear about today, you’re greatly distressed and in a crisis!  What do you do at such times?  Reach for a gallon of ice cream and go into seclusion?  Actually there’s a much better response.   Pastor Ed Taylor has observed four things we can apply to these seasons of life in First Samuel 30.  We’re learning how to defeat times of great distress today.
