A Daily Walk

An Example of Personal Sacrifice, Part 1

May 13, 2020

Here in America we focus a great deal on our rights and freedoms. But as we’ll see today on a Daily Walk sometimes as ministers of Jesus we’ll need to give up some of our rights and liberties for very good reason.  Pastor John Randall has us consider First Corinthians nine and a time when the apostle Paul gave up his rights as an apostle for the sake of his fruitfulness and effectiveness in the ministry.

We have great liberty in Christ, but does that mean anything goes? Maybe you’ve heard some of your friends excuse their wrong behavior, thinking that’s the case.  Our salvation is a free gift from God and isn’t obtained by works or legalistic rules. However, as we’ll see today, Christian freedom and Christian responsibility go hand in hand.

How do we make decisions on issues that the Scripture doesn't specifically address? Today on a Daily Walk we’ll be considering that very thing. Though the scripture doesn’t address every specific issue it does provide us with what we need for life and godliness. We are given principles that we can apply in our decision making.

In an effort to defend the positions we take concerning marriage and family we can overreact to the importance and benefit that being single provides to the Church and the furtherance of the gospel. To gain the right perspective concerning this issue turn with us to First Corinthians chapter seven on A Daily Walk.  We’re talking about the advantages of being single, and how to limit distractions if you’re married!

There’s a yearning within many of us to want something else or more for our lives. Maybe you’re dissatisfied with your current job or marriage.  Others may long for moving to another area.  But today on a Daily Walk we receive much needed encouragement to remain in the place God has called us.

It really is sad to see how lightly marriage is taken these days.  The divorce rate, the laws that are in place, and even the living together prior to marriage just goes to show how far we’ve declined as a society.  But God sees marriage entirely different, and He wants us to value and esteem marriage as highly as He does.  Today on a Daily Walk we’ll see that marriage matters.

The apostle Paul discusses singleness, marriage and sex in First Corinthians seven.  As sexual immorality is on the rise, we need to be reminded now more than ever what God has to say about sexual intimacy.  He created it to be enjoyed within the marriage relationship.  With that said, the Lord also gives some a gift of celibacy and calls them to remain single for a lifetime.

“It’s my body, I can do what I want with it! Or if it feels good, do it!”  If you’ve not said it yourself, no doubt you’ve heard something along those lines.  That’s the prevailing attitude in our day and age and it’s used to justify all sorts of behavior from abortion, to sex outside of marriage, or even harmful addictions.  Today on a Daily Walk we’re given practical instruction on how to use our body in a God-glorifying way.

As believers we have daily choices and decisions to make and at times we can think of a chapter and verse that tells us exactly what to do.  But there are also certain things that would fall in the bucket of our Christian liberties.  As we’ll discover today that doesn’t necessarily mean we should do it.  Before Paul the apostle would exercise a liberty he would put it through a grid.  Pastor John Randall will draw our attention to that to help us arrive at the very best decisions in life.

We can all probably think of a person or two that claims to be a Christian, yet their life is really no different than any other non-christian out there.  They’re living with their boyfriend or girlfriend, stealing from their boss, and getting drunk virtually every weekend.  We’ll notice today what that sort of sinful lifestyle reveals about the person.

When we’re wronged by someone or our rights are violated we might be tempted to take it into the legal system. And in certain instances that may be the appropriate course of action. But let’s say the person who did you wrong is a Christian… what then?  Should Christians sue Christians?  Today on a Daily Walk that very question is raised.
