A Song in the Night, Part 2

April 6, 2021

If you were beaten with rods, and thrown in prison for doing what God told you to do how do you think you’d respond?  If you’re like most, you might be angry or even turn bitter.  Then complain about it on social media.  But not Paul and Silas.  We’re told they prayed and praised. God gave them a song in the night. And He can do the same for us as we suffer for the name of Christ. Today on a Daily Walk we’re looking at Acts sixteen.

Trouble and turmoil is all around us, but on this special weekend we pause to remember there’s glorious hope to be found in the midst of it all, thanks to Jesus!  And the focus today is on the resurrection of Christ.  This one single event altered the course of human history, but as you’ll see, it also affects our eternal destiny!

As Christians we will have disagreements and conflict from time to time.  And at times it can even lead to division, sad to say.  But how we deal with it is very important! In fact, you might be able to resolve the conflict. Pastor John Randall is about to open Acts fifteen!  And here we learn a thing or two about Conflict Resolution.

We’re at the midway point of our journey through Acts, here on a Daily Walk!  We’ll join pastor John Randall in chapter fifteen.  And at this point in the early church there’s conflict and controversy. Paul and Barnabas have been doing the Lord’s work, sharing the salvation message.  But now they’re facing opposition within their own ranks.  We’re about to learn how to handle conflicts like these, when they arise in our Daily Walk!

Whether it’s at the office, in school, at home or even in church we’ll face opposition and hardship.  That’s usually a sign we’re on the right track.  The enemy opposes the work of the Lord, and so if we’re doing what God wants us to do we’ll be opposed at some point in time.  So how do we persevere?  That’s the question we’ll present today on a Daily Walk.

Maybe you sort of feel like Rocky Balboa today.  Life is beating you down, and you don’t think you can make it another round!  Today on a Daily Walk, we’ll learn that perseverance is needed at times like these, and God is more than willing to help us get off the mat and continue on.  We’re in Acts fourteen, with pastor John Randall.

We come to a very familiar verse today on a Daily Walk, Romans eight twenty-eight!  It reminds us that believers are in the hands of God, who in His remarkable providence works all things together for good.  But how do you really know that all things are working together for good in your life?  Maybe that seems hard to believe when the doctor says its cancer, or you have a flat tire on the side of the road.  Pastor John Randall looks into this very question today, as we return to Romans chapter eight.

Pastor John Randall will give attention to verses 13-41, where we find Paul’s first recorded sermon. Back in the first century there were those thoroughly convinced that the way to heaven was by observing the law.  That sort of thinking is still around but nothing could be further from the truth!  Paul wants to make it clear that justification is by turning and trusting.  Turning from your sin and trusting in Jesus alone!  Simply put, we can’t be good enough to get there on our own.

What makes a good sermon?  I think you’d agree there needs to be teaching from the Bible, and it would be a good idea to include the Gospel message too!  Paul’s first recorded sermon features just that.  It’s a survey of the Old and New Testaments up until that point in time, and also he emphasized the Gospel.  It’s a powerful sermon and one we’ll look at today.
