At first, the Israelites celebrated their deliverance, but then they looked back to Egypt. In the midst of their grumbling, the Lord showered them with grace and rained manna from heaven.

Exodus 13 through 14 is a portrait of deliverance: As God's people were set free from bondage in Egypt, so we are redeemed by Jesus Christ from the bondage to sin. He gives us freedom and a new life.

As the Israelites were partaking of the Passover, the firstborn in all the households of the Egyptians died. It was only then that Pharaoh allowed the Jews to depart, as God had ordained.

The Passover is the most striking foreshadowing of the Cross in Scripture. The sacrificial lamb and the blood protecting from death is a picture of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

When God instituted the Passover, he told them that would be the first month of the year for them. Because of Passover, the Jewish calendar is actually centered on redemption.
