Drink water from your own cistern and fresh water from your own well. PROVERBS 5:15
Do you find it interesting that the warnings about sexual temptation in Proverbs are directed at men? Proverbs 7, for example, describes the wily harlot seducing the foolish young man who wanders too close to her door.
While women are certainly not immune from being tempted in this area, I find it remarkable that the Scriptures are almost exclusive in giving examples of men falling into this sin:
•Judah sleeping with his daughter-in-law, thinking she was a prostitute (see Genesis 38)
•David and Bathsheba (see 2 Samuel 11)
•Samson and Delilah (see Judges 16)
A wife must understand that men are prime targets for sexual temptation. And one of the easiest ways for this sin to get a foothold in a man's life is for his sexual needs to remain unmet at home. In a man's world, there are many voices tempting him to fulfill his needs through illicit and perverted recreational outlets. Counterfeit pleasures beckon from every street corner, every magazine rack and every modem.
Because God's perspective on sex in marriage is so misunderstood by most of us, the potential for men and women to miss each other is enormous. A wife can easily misinterpret her husband's sexual need and interest as a weakness or, at worst, a selfish demand. And sometimes his timing may not be ideal.
But we as women have a unique and powerful opportunity in marriage—not just to affirm our husbands in an area central to his manhood, but also to be used of God to help him remain pure. A wife who understands this power she has with her husband is a woman who is pleasing to God. Remembering the big picture of God's purposes and His good intentions helps keep the momentary challenges of marriage in correct perspective.
It's not unspiritual to talk about your sexual needs. Make time soon to open up with each other, being honest to share . . . and eager to respond and meet one another's needs.
Thank God for the way He created each of you—as perfect matches for one another.
