Esther 8-9 Part 1

April 19, 2024

God is in control and our current study of the book of Esther has been reminding us of that truth. In chapter eight we’ll learn that God’s sovereign control is not an excuse for believers to be indifferent toward the world’s evils.

A Study in the Book of Ruth
The book of Ruth is more than just a God ordained love story, although it is certainly that as well.  It reveals the extent of God’s kindness and grace. He accepted Ruth, once an outcast, into his chosen people, and went on to  honor her by  allowing King David and Jesus to be born of her lineage.  Pastor Thom explores the life of Ruth in his 13 message series entitled, Experience Hope in the Life of Ruth.  Request your copy today, on USB flash drive or CD, for a gift  of $25 or more.

You’ve probably heard the complaint of having responsibility but not the authority to carry it out?   But there’s also the problem of having authority and yet shirking our duty. We all have someone or something we’re responsible for and there’s always the potential to misuse our authority in an irresponsible way. Today’s Study The Word will provide incentives to righty use our authority, responsibly. Pastor Thom Keller is in the middle of his series in Esther!

It sure is important to keep the lines of communication open with God especially in case of emergency.  Of course emergency prayers must be backed up with a life of devotion and regular communion with God.  Pastor Thom is taking us through the Old Testament book of Esther. In chapter seven we come to a climax in this intriguing story of the providence of God persevering His people in answer to their prayer. The timing of the events is nothing less than miraculous and very encouraging to God’s people.

Someone has defined circumstances as “Those nasty things you see when you get your eyes off of God.” All too many are being lead by circumstances rather than by God.  Today’s Study The Word will help us  not repeat that mistake.  In Esther chapter six Haman serves as a classic example of misreading circumstances. As a result he’s in for a big surprise.  And it’s not a happy one.

As we look at our world today it’s a comfort to know that God is in control and working all things together for good. Yet the sovereignty of God is not to be an excuse for indifference or carelessness but to comfort us and strengthen our resolve.  As we continue in the book of Esther today on Study the Word we’ll be given greater assurance that what is happening in your life in not just a coincidence.

The Apostle Paul states in Philippians 4:11 that he had learned to be content, no matter his circumstances.  What a great example to follow. Pastor Thom is continuing in Revelation, chapter twenty, and the events are moving quickly to the “Final Judgment”.

We live in a time when too many are paralyzed by fear. Even Christians can be affected by unhealthy fears and as a result  hindered in their relationship with God. How about you? Are you fearful or confident in your relationship with the Lord? Think that through today on Study The Word.

God is in control of our circumstances but the one thing He will not control is how we will respond to them.  God in His sovereignty will not violate or freedom of choice even though we may suffer the consequences of our choices. So it’s wise to discover God’s desires and then respond accordingly. Still it can be costly to do so!

As the world gets darker and becomes more and more difficult to be a Christian  we have a choice to make. Will we stand for the Lord and prepare our children, or will we head for the hills in surrender?  We’ll meet you in Esther chapter four and take a look at the very famous verse, “For such as time as this.” It’s a call to stand for the Lord and to prepare our children for the challenges they’ll face in life.  And it will be a battle.

Who decides when it comes to what’s best for our children? In a day when there are so many competing voices expressing their desires for our children it’s helpful to be reminded of God’s desires.  And we’ll do that today on Study The Word with pastor Thom Keller. We’re in Esther chapter four. It’s there that the very existence of God’s people are at stake.

Esther chapter four includes the famous verse, “Who knows whether you’ve come to the Kingdom for such a time as this.” It’s a timely word for us today. And the implication of it inspires great wonder.

About Study the Word

Study the Word is a radio ministry of Calvary Chapel Lebanon, Pennsylvania. It features the teaching ministry of pastor Thom Keller.  As we go verse by verse through the Scriptures, our hearts desire is to encourage you to not only Study the Word, but seek to follow God and obey His Word.

About Pastor Thom Keller

Thom began teaching an inner-city Bible study in 1995. That love of teaching God’s word eventually led to the formation of Calvary Chapel Lebanon in October, 2001, with about 50 people meeting in an old hardware store. Our church ministry and philosophy centers on teaching God’s word chapter by chapter, verse by verse.

Prior to pastoring, Thom was president and general manager of Keller Brothers Ford, a third-generation family business that began in 1921.  After 8 years of bi-vocational ministry, in 2009, Thom sold the business and became a full-time pastor.

Thom and his wife, Sue, live near Schaefferstown. Thom and Sue enjoy snow skiing, mountain biking and motorcycle rides.  Thom has often said that he loves performing weddings because he loves being married!

Ted, pictured above is Sue’s brother who has lived with Thom and Sue since 2001.

“It has been an absolute joy to see the changes God is bringing about in the lives of individuals, marriages and families at Calvary Chapel. God’s word does not return void!”

Currently we have worship services Sunday morning at 8:00 AM, 9:30 AM and 11:00 AM at our church located at 740 Willow St.  Please introduce yourself when you stop by!
