You've Been Chosen Forever #4of 4

May 4, 2010
None of us chose to be born to our parents. It would be folly to think we could've had a say in coming into this world. The birth process into God's family is no different. Peter says, "as newborn babes desire the sincere milk of the word." God graciously makes sure we are spiritually born, and then provides the resources we need to grow in that grace as His children.

In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Those who believe in Jesus and have found new life all share a common reality: they were chosen by God in eternity past. Before they were born, God knew they would share in His eternal kingdom. This would involve forgiving their sins and declaring them to be as righteous as His Son. If life now seems uncertain, know this: your future is as secure as the God who will make sure you get there.

Trying to understand fully the mind of God is a bit like taking a drink from a firehose. There's way too much for us to grasp. Comprehending His purposes in the crucial area of personal salvation is something we need to come to grips with. In the majestic eighth chapter of Romans, the matter is at the core of Paul's teaching. Today: a clear look at what, for many, is a hard-to-understand part of the Christian faith.

These days, seeker-friendly churches are everywhere. We assume people will seek God, if we make them comfortable. As a believer matures in the faith, he or she comes to realize that salvation is not so much a result of our seeking God as it is the result of God choosing us first. Listen to learn why, if God had not done this, none of us would ever have chosen Him.

Some people face adversity with a dour disposition. "What next," they say. Such people don't see a larger Hand at work. The hand of God moves in the lives of His people to bring about good even when the circumstances are bad. Through the eye of faith, we who know Him can be sure that a better day is coming, and we can live triumphantly no matter what comes our way.

"All things work together for good to them who love God..." does this promise include tragedy and disasters? It's easy to see God's hand when blessings are flowing, it's tougher when all we sense is bad news. Today we look at some ways God uses life's rough spots to fashion in us the character He desires to see. Stay tuned for more from a famous chapter in the book of Romans.

Some call them delusional. They gaze in wonder at believers who accept even tragedy as part of a greater good. Only a Christian can be certain that all of life is heading toward a future glory. That's why a believer can know that all things, even the bad things, work together for good for those who love God. For a challenging message on a famous Bible verse, please stay with us.

When the economy worsens, many find themselves suffering for the first time. No job, foreclosure, fear for the future. Christians get socked by life's reversals like anyone else. But there is a crucial difference. The believer knows he or she has a permanent home where no foreclosure is possible and where all suffering will end. Today: why we never groan alone when experiencing trials.

Someone once said, "Once you're 60, if it doesn't hurt, it doesn't work." Well, as we believers age, we long for heaven. We long to be free of the limitations of this body, and from the pain we often endure. Suffering is a lot easier to bear when we have hope for a future day when all suffering will cease. That's the hope Paul speaks of in the marvelous eighth chapter of Romans.

The rain falls on the just and the unjust, as humans, none of us escapes times of pain, sorrow, or deprivation. It's tough to be optimistic when slogging through life's tough times. Some people try to grin and bear it; others crack under the pressure. Christians can have a different perspective: looking toward a future glory that makes our present suffering infinitesimal in comparison.

"The Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs. joint heirs with Christ." That's the teaching of Romans chapter 8, a promise for believers of being given the riches of heaven despite being unworthy sinners. Just like a father gives gifts to his kids, God invites His children into the throne room to partake of His bounty.
