You Have Hope in Suffering #1 of 3

April 21, 2010
The rain falls on the just and the unjust, as humans, none of us escapes times of pain, sorrow, or deprivation. It's tough to be optimistic when slogging through life's tough times. Some people try to grin and bear it; others crack under the pressure. Christians can have a different perspective: looking toward a future glory that makes our present suffering infinitesimal in comparison.

When You’ve Been Wronged
Conflict in relationships is inevitable, but healing and reconciliation often is not. Time and again we've tried every option and failed, and all we are left with is a load of guilt and pain. Pastor Erwin Lutzer shows how the blessing the Lord gives to those who suffer unjustly is worth the pain involved. He also illustrates the need to leave our broken relationships in the hands of God and move forward in our lives toward freedom. "The Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs. joint heirs with Christ." That's the teaching of Romans chapter 8, a promise for believers of being given the riches of heaven despite being unworthy sinners. Just like a father gives gifts to his kids, God invites His children into the throne room to partake of His bounty.

The Bible says, "Eye hath not seen the things God has prepared for those that love Him." Believer: just wait. Think life's tough for you? Just wait. Think people treat you poorly? Just wait. Think you've always gotten the short end of life's stick? Just wait. As a member of the body of Christ, your inheritance is earning interest right now in the bank of heaven. One day you will make a withdrawal.

When a child is fearful, his first instinct is to run into the arms of his parents. There's safety and comfort in the family. Christians are born into God's family, and they don't find God unapproachable at all. From Romans 8 we learn that the Holy Spirit births in them the desire for intimacy with God, in fact, even the desire to call Him "daddy." Can you call God "Papa?" If not, stay tuned.

How would you feel if you got a letter saying that an unknown benefactor had died, leaving you ten million dollars? You check, and find you're an heir to a fortune, and didn't know it. An heir is exactly what you are as a child of God. In the book of Romans, we read that "The Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, joint heirs with Christ."

Most people are stuck in a rut, trying to satisfy themselves with things that only make finding satisfaction more elusive. But the believer in Christ has a whole new life, a life with new desires: desires that God satisfies deeply as we walk in His light. Today: more reasons why Christians are indeed "Children of an Awesome God."

There aren't many things anyone can be sure of anymore. But despite the economy, we can be certain of one thing. If we are believers in Christ, we have a future beyond the reach of the bill collector, beyond the reach of our failures and sins, a future safe in the hands of the God who guarantees that for us as believers, there is no condemnation ahead in the life to come.

The economy might soon tank, stocks might plummet, foreclosures might rise. So where is your security found? If you know Christ as savior, your bank deposits are safe, perfectly safe, where "moth and rust cannot corrupt." That bank is not of this world, and, as a child of God, neither are you. Today we look into a Bible chapter listing more blessings than we can ever fathom.

Proverbs 22:6: "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it." God gave this command to parents, not governments. Throughout history, tyrants have always targeted the young, requiring them to be educated in government schools. Do they take Proverbs more literally than many believers? Today we see a clarion call for parents to face, and embrace, their obligations.

There's a cardinal rule for all who seek to oppress a people: control the flow of information that the people receive. In the past, that meant turning newspapers into government mouthpieces. Now the job is harder. Technology has increased the avenues through which information can travel. And so, propaganda must become ever more sophisticated. Today we look at the power of propaganda.

Dictators know that imposing laws is step one in achieving absolute power. Control the laws, and you control the people. Laws provide the framework for arrest and prosecution, they instill in people a fear of what might happen if they break those laws. The Christian knows that there is always a higher law, no matter what government may claim. The result is the dilemma of when to disobey those in power.
